I prefer internal sync as a rule. It seems like the anime and music are meshing. External sync is the creator and music meshing, or the editing program and the music. Effects used for external sync usually make the anime seem even further removed from the song - if you can't find a way to make the footage match, you add something on top of it.

I don't see internal sync often and almost never in faster songs. As long as the external sync is mostly beat-sync cuts, you're still seeing the anime manipulated to fit the song. It's those non-anime effects added on top of the footage that are risky, if they distract from the footage too much I might as well not be watching an anime video. You could replace the anime with any colorful moving footage and you'd have the same video, maybe even a better one.

KioAtWork: I'm so bored. I don't have class again for another half hour.
Minion: masturbate into someones desk and giggle about it for the remaining 28 minutes

Don't you know...how popular I am...on the Internet? (greatest flash animation ever)

Oh yeah, I'm popular...on teh intarwebs...my magnificent bastard levels are over 9,000!

Here's a random thought though...would scene jumping or frame skipping be considered internal or external synch?

As a matter of fact. . .I saw Ileia's avatar for the first time a little further up on the first page of this thread while listening to Rammstein's Mein Teil. It. . .it just kept getting funnier and funnier. I think I hurt something laughing.

As for the actual thread topic: I almost never use external sync beyond basic transitions. On the other hand, these days I'm starting to think that the best approach to internal sync is the same approach I take with effects: The best ones are often those the audience doesn't consciously notice.

I like internal... because I'm lazy... looking for a syncing point as oppose to creating a syncing material from scratch is I reckon a lesser waste of my time. Of course, it's easy enough to just plonk in some cheap and crappy external sync effect, but... you know... it's cheap... and crap.
