Someone wrote some sort of college thesis on the history of anime music videos, and a link to it was posted here. Or maybe on the site. Sorry not to be more specific! I read it in the last year, so it should be still available somewhere. It stated (among various other interesting facts) that they were born in the early 80s. In any case, earlier than I had imagined.

I'm sure someone will know what I'm thinking of and will provide you with a link, if you can't find the paper.

I remember seeing a trek music video when i was like 13 or so (around 92) i didnt realize until later that it was probably fanmade
