While we're on the subject of "through an editor's eyes" (which is a better way to put it), somebody brought up the following idea on Saturday night (though I never caught his name):

There are vinyls sold of just breakbeats that DJs buy. What if some editor just went through an anime and cut out all the "AMV-able" parts and distributed that? Of course, any scene can be used in an AMV by different editors with different styles, but it's a funny idea to kick around.

for me its almost a film aspect: i see cuts or cinematography that i think they coulda done this better... its not just anime but just about everything i watch... i tend to analyze it and try to figure out how they are making their cuts or graphics....

also, i remember getting slightly annoyed at a tv/sign in the mall this weekend for neglecting to deinterlace... it was a fricken cartoon network ad (in other words "pro") and they couldn't bother to deinterlace for a screen that shows such flaws >:[

I actually found myself not enjoy anime as much but realized it was because I was watching things I knew going in I wouldn't enjoy or purely tolerating bad anime because I was searching for scenes...

In the last year or two I've just decided to only watch what I enjoy and if I need a scene from horrible anime I can always find it when the time comes.

Isn't this just a simple case of anime losing its initial glamour and shine? I doubt too many can forever keep watching the amount of anime, as they used to when the hobby was still somewhat new and interesting. You just can't really expect to consume that much on the long run and it naturally tends to slow down.

Is this your powerful urge to continuously try and come up with something new to create, or is the show you watching just not that interesting? If you're interest is left unattended, then surely you will focus on the insignificant as you exampled. On the other hand, if you can't just sit back, watch the show and transfer away from the editor's point of view, then you're all just trying too hard.

My humble opinion on the matter.

Like many other editors, I'm also not very interested in anime these days. I don't believe this to be in any way due to editing. If anything, editing AMVs has kept me far more involved in anime than I would otherwise be. A lot of people just get tired of anime after a while. It's like buying the new version of Madden every year. It's practically the same damn game, with a few changes. The clichés, and general lack of originality inherent in most anime just leaves me disinterested, or perhaps only passively interested. Sure, every now and then I might take the time to watch and really enjoy an anime. That doesn't necessarily make me an anime fan any more than playing the latest Madden makes me a Madden fan.

I make anime music videos because I love editing anime. I don't want to edit live action. It's weird. You can't really lip sync it, or play with the speed too much, and it's hard to really change stuff around within the frames unless you work for industrial light and magic. I don't really have much interest in filming my own material either, because anything I could film would be boring. Anime can look very beautiful, and its relatively easy to do lots of cool editing stuff with it. It just makes a pretty natural fit for music videos.

So... ok now... where was I going with this...
geez... I can't remember :\

Anyways, I think my point was, no, I don't believe AMVs cause lost interest in anime. It just happens on its own.

Sometimes I watch anime just because I saw a really cool video using it and noticed potential amv material. Basically I just look out for useful scenes in them. But it's not always like that. Sometimes I also I watch anime based on someone's recommendation or a personal hunch. I must say I enjoy anime a lot more that way (e.g. I finally got around watching Naruto and I find it very interesting; I also don't look for scenes and don't plan to make a video of it). So for me, there are both of the cases present...

x3. I've been feeling that way about anime for a wile now, tho I thort it was more due to my drifting away from the hole con-going lot. I find that im only watch a couple of shows, just coz I want something to watch wile I eat brakefast at work.

If anything AMV's spark my intrest in shows I'd just down-right ignor.
