Just don't get in over your head, it's going to get a lot harder. When you start breaking an AMV down frame by frame, it can be quite overwhelming.

Translation: Don't go with a six-minute song.

Suggestion: Grab a song you wouldn't necessarily hear on the radio, like the intro music you really like to a game or a movie or something. Chances are it will have more depth, have been created for a specific thematic purpose and be of manageable size (or can be cut down to manageable size). The odds of it having been used by 30,000 people also will be considerably less (unless it's anything resembling Lux Aeterna...don't go there).

What's "popular"? Popular with who?

I think there's often a bit of a disparity between viewers and makers. It's just like at cons, I've noticed that comedy gets by far the best response from general audiences, but the most heavily-contested categories (i.e. with most submissions) are drama and the like

Likewise there's always a question of what constitutes a music genre. It's a bit of an abstraction.

Translation: whatever!

For your purposes, you'd be best-served by taking a look at what others have done for Advent Children videos. Generally I think nu-metal of some kind would be predominant.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Linkin Park is its own category in a very real sense. If it wasn't, we wouldn't have the longstanding joke about Linkin Ball Z. Of course, now it's more like Naruto Park Z.

I prefer alternative, rock, pop. But I've used everything except rap and thrash. I really dislike both of those. I could never listen to them over and over and over as many times as it would required to edit to them.
