it depends on the video...

Some videos I make to specifically annoy others, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

Other videos I make for the person who asked me to make it (I've several videos requested from my nieces and nephews or close friends who don't edit - if they like it that's all that matters to me - if other people like it on top of that then its a bonus)

My last video was made for "loveless fangirls who like the SoubixRitsuka pairing specifically, and can't get enough of more SoubiXRistuska videos" O.o if other people like it on top of that then cool. If they don't get it then no stress for me, it wasn't made for them, it was made for the squeeing fangirls who like that pairing.

Sometimes I think about what others are gonna think, but usually I try to edit for myself, and choose ideas I like.

I do like the idea of others liking my work though, but it's okay at the same time if they don't because in the end you can't please everyone.

Is having an easy understanding of the video a mark of something good?
Varies for me. But if it was a matter being insanely predictable, No.

What about those videos, which aren't easy to understand, yet are still widely accepted?
Most amvs are like an inkblot pictures to me personally. If you mean for your video to make sense or not, it's likely someone is able to add things that aren't even there or never were intended to be.

Speaking of inkblots.

I make my videos primarily because it's something I want to see. Sometimes I want to see it from the standpoint of "I haven't done this before and I wanna see if I can", other times it's from the standpoint of "I've never seen a video with this theme/anime/music combo, so I wanna make it."

I'd be lying if I said that when I edit a video, I'm thinking ONLY of myself. I mean, yeah, most of my decisions are made based on what I think will look good, but it'd be stupid for me to deny that I don't consider how others would react. There are even a few editors here on the .org that I think of for every single video I edit: "How will he/she react to this?" Not that this dictates the videos, but yeah, some of my editing decisions are based on such factors.

As as the topic goes, I suppose 'I wonder how many people this will annoy?' is thinking of the audience so yes, I usually do think of them.

For a viewer perspective, there has to be some sort of hook to interest me in the video. Easy understanding is only one possible hook. So no, it isn't required but it is one way to go.

I march to my own beat anyway and tend to overthink things sometimes, so I generally edit to my own groove whether I try to or not. If people get it, great. If not, oh well. If they come up with their own interpretation, more power to them. As much as I might sometimes want to do something "popular", that the general public would be able to get into and understand, I don't think I'm quite in touch with the general public, or reality for that matter, to be able to do so. So I'm basically stuck editing what I want to see and hope that some blind, deaf weirdo somewhere will enjoy it. :P

On the first run I go for myself and only myself. Ones I start handing out beta's I listen to people but ultimately what I say is final. Though with myself up front I still work extensively for other people as well. I'm mainly aiming for the people who'd recognize my handy work. And whom either know what it takes or at least understand the complexity.

I think you can seperate it in two sections:

1. Choice of concept, subject matter, story, music, etc. - which is something I just don't care about whether people are interested in it or not. I mean, I can put in exciting choreography, hawt chicks, cleavage and more hawt chicks and cleavage and know people are going to like it, but that's not the story I want to tell.

2. Editing - whether people are interested in the subject matter, music or whatever, I think it's important to make it work. I try to choose the music based on whether it will work with one, the cutting of the video based on excitement levels, suspense, build-up etc. because that's what you're editing for, to raise certain emotions in people. If not, then there would be no reason at all to choose and you could be doing only random stuff. I think there's always a reason why you put this there or did that there, even if you think it's for yourself: in a way you're thinking how things will work out best if all the people were like you, because at that moment you're trying to raise certain emotions in yourself. If this makes any sense. :)

If people eventually "feel" or "get" what you tried to achieve with the things in 1. (theme, concept, emotion, whatever) - even if they're not interested in the subject itself or don't understand the story in its details - then I'm a happy man. But if not, then I hope at least they felt something during watching and raised some emotions.

So yeah, it's both...

I like my videos to be understood and enjoyed by people who haven't seen the anime as well as by the people who have.

I don't really like making videos that only certain people will be able to 'get' them.

But if it were to ultimately come down to 'either people get it, or I like it', I'd put my interests first. I've never had to make that choice, I've always ended up being happier with the end result after people have beta'd and made suggestions on how it may be improved.

All my videos listed on the org are made for an audience (the IC and special ones are bit more grey area). Sure, I don't always ask, "will the audience understand or like what this particular cut achieved" when editing, but at least for the videos up here, from the birth of their concept, they'll always have been made with an audience in mind.

When the videos are out there and I get good responses from them, I say that's a win. If I get a flop, well, I move on and take in what went wrong with it, so that hopefully I won't commit the same mistake on the next video.

The videos I made for myself, are right here... not out there.
