When the alternative is lugging around 300gb+ worth of uncompressed footage, not including clips, I think it is still worth it. And I still have yet to see a marked difference in quality; for dvds released up until around '06 this method works fine IMHO.

Well, I guess you could ask VicBond directly, but he hasn't really been on much lately. And yeah, I wish I had a TB external :P

But aren't you going to make those 300+gb of clips later anyway? The divxified dvd takes up more space than the vobs most times. How is that not a waste of time?

Uhh, no. Right now I have 3gb 'divxified' footage, as vobs they would be around 30gb, as huffyuv probably at least 250gb; please note that I'm pulling most of these numbers out of my ass.

huffyuv clips? Currently about 2.5gb, I'd estimate by my project's finish around 10gb, which is still lower than vob footage.

Waste of time? OOOOK, since I'm processing the vobs through dvd2avi and avisynth anyways, how is it any less trouble to choose huffyuv instead of divx when exporting in VirtualDub? Unless you pull your clips straight from the entire episode/movie you ripped in an editing program, you're not even saving a step.

I'm not trying to say that keeping obscenely large footage on your hard drive is impractical, if that's how you do it, then more power to ya. But for people with limited amounts of space, this method will work nearly as well as long as it is done correctly. Personally, I can't tell the difference in quality; perhaps if you're an AMV elitist or cutting-edge technophile, you would care. I don't.

All my opinion of course; feel free to nitpick at my faulty logic, reasoning, fact usage, #s pulled out of ass etc. etc.

I have officially come out of my shell and throughly made an ass of myself on the forums by embroiling myself in a thread in which my technical knowledge is lightyears behind the likes of better editors than yours truly.

Hai gaiz, my name is Xexyzl, AMVs are kewl and I thot I'd post on teh forums.
