Are we over-complicating matters?

Eh, this is not an aberration that we can blame on some conspiracy of technocrats.
The real cause of this is the amount of competition in the community, which has skyrocketed. We wanted to get more AMV contests, and the idea blew up on us. Now everyone makes their con videos, and the smart ones make their con videos in ways that emphasize technical merits, the "objective" measure of success. It's not that there's anything wrong with it or that it's somehow worse than the "old school". It's just that you have to live with it now. If you're not fine with it, I have only one thing to suggest to you: boycott AMV contests. See if anyone cares

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Well I don't like all the Beta-test shit.
Everybody can do the Vids they like, I don't have standart expections on users. All I want is not too pixelated and no subs.
Nothing beats the hardcut (on the right place of course)

What if there were used 100 Masks for a 2 sec transition ? When I came on here I got the feeling that vids with many (moar or less) useless masks were some kind of guaranteed recognizing and respect for the editor.Kevmaster wrote:Deaf Jester wrote:Nothing beats the fade. Nothing.

It is logical that things change, nothing is forever, the same applies to amvs I like amvs of the old school because each is different, each has his style and his technical editing, I also like the new Amvs, new editing techniques, depends on the editor to use well these new techniques to achieve something different!

We have a winner. I haven't seen that put so succinctly before - kudos.Otohiko wrote:...the smart ones make their con videos in ways that emphasize technical merits, the "objective" measure of success.
It all comes down to - "if you don't want to spend all your free time editing a time-sink, then don't. Don't expect others to follow suit though."

This thread is the first thread I've looked at in months that wasn't under one of the following three categories:
1) threads I've previously posted on
2) threads in the AMV Contests board
3) threads mentioning my name
What a happy coincidence that it's a perfect reminder of why I stopped paying attention to the fora in the first place.
My attitude about the whole thing is still the same: make the videos I want to make, send them to whatever conventions make sense (esp. if I'm attending), and screw what everyone else thinks about my motives.
Sometimes I just want to make a quick minute of silliness; sometimes I want to make a large-scale project with so much masking that I may not even have it done by the time it hits three years since I started. But ever since I started doing this five years ago, my attitude has not changed.
As a side note, I really don't download videos much anymore, but when I do, I usually get them simply because they have songs and animé I like. (Which means that I have absolutely no idea what the most popular videos of the last year and a half are.)

No but we are focusing on entirely the wrong things and to a large degree we're a bunch of hypocritical lying elitist bastards who actively try to run absolutely everyone away from the hobby. Considering my usual attitude I shouldn't complain I guess. However in a healthy community I'd be the extreme outlier on the edge of being permabanned and these days it feels like I'm fairly mainstream for the org...Deaf Jester wrote:Are we killing the heart and soul of the org?
