I showed my father some of my vids back when I was living at home to help explain the huge electric bill and the presence of the trophies and such. He was so impressed that he told his friends at work about it and got me to give him copies to show them. My younger brother and several of my cousins were at least passively interested in what I spent time on every so often, many of them have accounts here or just get me to send them vids.
My friends tend to beta everything I make and/or watch the finished products on a semi-regular basis. They're all into it to some degree - mostly for comedy vids.

My parents think that JCD is the greatest editor to have ever walked the earth.
That's what I get for always using his stuff in direct contrast to my own work.
They're always like "Hey, that's pretty good" and then I'm like "No it's not, this is."
And then they're like "Yeah you're right. Wow you suck, son."
And then I'm like ";_;"

All of my friends know what I do, and most are totally into it. In fact some of the otaku freaks at work have seen my videos on dashack. Hell I have even introduced a few people to editing, though they are still a bit gun-shy about PDA (public displays of anime.)

My folks gave my brother "MY" approval to use my older amv's as his entry-project for art college. That either means they like them, or they hate me. Could be both. But what is evident is the fact that 6 months later he still packages meat at a large chain grocery store part-time, and swears up and down that $1/lb ground chuck from HIS store is far superior to Kobe Steak at at prestigious restaurant.
Now imagine your the dean of admissions at a world renowned art college and 24 year old, 2-time college flunky hands you a CD with Yatta and SBN on it with a 3 paragraph word document basically saying I r teh edit master 'n me wnats ta B e big-tyme produsr.
You:
a.) laugh uncontrollably
b.) shed tears and pity, allot, the likes of which Mr. T could never even parallel
c.) maintain composure and show him/her to the door as fast as possible.
d.) all of the above.
e.) ruin your college's reputation and completely defeating the enrollment process by allowing this non-sense to occur

my family knows i make amvs and probably just view it as a slightly wierd/amusing hobby, neither my parents or sister are particularly technologically savy so they really have no idea of how to make them while they do find them sometimes amusing.
many of my friends are anime watchers or at least know that i watch anime and when i find a particularly funny/amazing amv they usually enjoy watching them.
i'll be entering the army in about half a year and i probably wont be broadcasting my interest in anime as i dont want to give my men a strange impression of my right off the bat. i wont hide it if it comes up in conversationg but i wont be hanging posters in my office, (not that i have any posters anyway heh).

Yeah, that's generally the interest level from parents for me. They're supportive, sure, but they question why no money is being generated from it, or rather, why conventions don't give out cash prizes instead of the DVDs... yeah... I want cash prize toox_rex30 wrote:My god I hear that way too much.Castor Troy wrote:"You should get a job doing this"
My brother and sister are probably my best and easiest access to critics. They don't care enough about how I feel, as much as I don't care about them, to have to sugarcoat any negative comments. Sometimes my younger cousins are useful too, but the word "cool" is generally the only vocabulary useful from them.
Friends are always supportive too and they have tried editting themselves, but at the end of the day, I think you really need to come in to this hobby on your own to stick with it rather than because you thought it was the "in thing" to do, so at the end of the day, most of them are just appreciators of the hobby.
