Re: How do you storyboad\plan your amvs?
As Kariudo, I only pick my source after I hear the song and have the video in mind. If I can't envision at least a good half of the song, I won't even bother trying to do it. >_>
Anyways, after that, I try to plan the whole song in my mind, but the only video that required me to extensively plan the scenes was cookies... for that one, first I knew exactly which scenes I wanted and had scene selection in mind. After that, I'd go hunt down the scenes while watching the anime, checking if different scenes would eventually work better, or if scenes I seemed to remember actually existed and weren't just my imagination. I then wrote the timestamps of the scenes on a block notes with the lines of the song I wanted to set them to, and just clipped in virtualdub to later put them in premiere. This, though, I did only once I reached perhaps one third of the timeline done. I originally were clipping straight in premiere with the episodes imported in avs... when editing became too slow, lagarith clips became the only solution to make it doable (I was still on a 1.7ghz single core... it wasn't nice to edit on that one...).
For the other videos, while I always had the timeline more or less in mind before editing, I never had to write down the timestamps.

Re: How do you storyboad\plan your amvs?
Firstly I get a brief from my client. I then set about researching the subject in all it's various forms and media. When I have completed a sufficient amount of research I move onto concepts, testing out how many alternative routes I could take. At the same time I continue with research. Once I have a good deal of concepts I pick out the 3 I think would work best and begin developing them. In the development process I begin culling down the options until I'm left with just one, which I proceed to polish and send to my peers for feedback and suggestions. When I have finally exhausted all possible options I add the final touches and it becomes the finished product.

Timestamped notes in a txt file is about as detailed as I get. They tend to run the gambit in detail based on what i feel is needed to jog my memory if I have to put the thing down for a while.

I rarely storyboard physically, but I always storyboard in my mind. Which can be troublesome, based on the fact I sometimes storyboard that which doesn't exist in the source. I have to pick alternate scenes or rotoscope.

I plan the final scene.
Then create the rest of the video so it leads up to that.

Re: How do you storyboad\plan your amvs?
A little more detailed explanation of what I've done with my video.
Step 1: Fool around IRC
Step 2: Have an idea forced on me by Nya-chan
Step 3: Let Nya-chan pick the song.
Step 4: Pick an anime
Step 5: Listen to the song
Step 6: With no idea of what I'm going to do, I watch the anime at 4x speed and look for scenes.
Step 6.5: Sleep
Step 7: Rip DVDs
Step 8: Start editing with a vague idea of what I'm doing and a list of clips.
Step 9: Create a rough beta and spend 3 hours trying to figure out how to encode the damn thing with Premiere Pro so it works with ZarxGUI
Step 10: Success, but find Nya has logged off so I can't show her my hard work.
Step 10.5: Sleep
Step 11: Edit some more.
Step 12: Spend hours trying to fill in same 12 seconds.
Step 13: Sudden burst of inspiration.
Step 14: Fill the space.
Step 15: Make some adjustments here and there.
Step 16: Encode
Step 17: When rainbows attack.
Step 18: Doesn't worry about it since it's just a beta and not the final.

Sometimes, I have two or three ends in the vid, though.

I've made song maps before. They didn't help.
