Re: Just curious about how people opinionate things
In the "good" section, I say what I liked about the amv overall. And then I list the timestamp of my favorite parts and the scenes that I found to be especially good.
Example: (2:56-3:09) This scene was awesome. It helps set the mood for the climax
In the "bad" section, I say what I disliked about the amv overall, and say how I feel it could have been improved. Then I list the timestamp of every single scene in the entire AMV that I feel can be improved. (I do this while watching the AMV almost a dozen times and analyzing every single mistake/ error that I find)
Example: (1:05-1:10) This scene is mistimed. You should have sped it up and started it 3 seconds earlier.
In the "general" section, I say my overall opinion of the AMV, give it a rating, and say anything that I didn't want to put into the previous sections.
My opinions a usually almost a page long when I type them in Microsoft word. They sometimes take me 1-2 hours to do, and I usually have to watch the AMV about 10 times before I finish typing the opinion.
This is why I only do opinions for AMVs that I really like. LOL

I write it in such a way that the words mask just how crap the video might have been.

I start with the assumption that the editor is a total moron.
Then I talk about how fucking awesome I am for a few paragraphs.
Then I go get drunk.

Re: Just curious about how people opinionate things
I don't use the good or bad portions, and only use the general for the most part. Leaves me more open to comment freely as to what comes to mind. Not to mention I end up feeling bad when I write more in the bad space for text even though I probably shouldn't. It’s all so easier to mix and talk about what worked and what didn’t more freely.
Audio is almost always a 10 from me simply because unless you using a 96kbps pos then I don't see a problem, unless there is bad mixing be it a MEP.
Video is usually 7-10 these days cause it's honestly hard to mess up here now. Even DVD footage without any avisynthing doesn't look bad, unless your using downloaded material or a quality whore.
Editing spans honestly, can't really explain this one well. If I watched the amv and their wasn't a dull moment then I just gave it a 10 since it was thoroughly enjoyed.
The other # rating ones are way to subjective and depend too much on other things.
I try to reason why I gave the # that I did for every category so people don't think I'm just picking random #'s. Like Example:
- Video Quality - *9*
The edges were really jaggedy on some of the video, possibly due to over zooming, or resizing without proper anti aliasing for compensation... Only noticeable problem that kept it from a 10.
etc...
After noting the things that really stood out in the video and the drawbacks if any I just give my overall thoughts at the end of the Op and try to be encouraging if I didn't like the AMV. Afterall trying to please me or viewers with a person's works should be the last thing on their mind for a hobby. I all so include some advice here as to some scripting functions for avisynth for video problems or possible editing ideas for future projects for the drawbacks if there was any or I put it under the editing rating like I did for video quality above.

"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Should 'go get drunk' be the first step instead of the last? Opinions would be so much more amusing if people were plastered while writing them.inthesto wrote:I start with the assumption that the editor is a total moron.

Galamgrithal wrote:I have been reading reviews the past couple days and I began wondering how everyone writes their opinions.
For example, I write my opinions based upon all of the videos the contributing creator has made.
I find the best video he or she made and when they release a new video I compare the new on to the best one that he or she made.
I also seem to be not as anal about over used stuff, around three fourths of the reviews I read for Bleach amvs all said that they rated it low in originality because Bleach is over used. But I look at it differently. For me a creator could use the most over used anime on the planet, but as long as the theme and music are fresh I do not really care.
Personally if there is something I do not like, instead of taking points off of originality or effort, I take them out of the review-ability.
Again just curious!
For me, I also only leave opinions for videos I like. If I think the editor has some potential and their video is bad then I'll leave some op information about stuff they could fix to become better.
But I am a believer in that the originality pertains to what anime and music they used. If I see a DBZ/Naruto/Bleach with a Linkin Park song, instant 4 or lower for originality.
