Lone Wolf wrote:Take THIS AMV for example. It is absolutely disgustingly bad. As of typing this up, it has 7087 hits...that's more than what some of the well known editors get for some of their good videos. You want to know what's even worse?...take a look at the AMV's OPINIONS. Why is such a shitty video so popular? (I found this video by quick searching 'alchemist' and finding a video with a lot of hits, to prove my point.)

Game. Set. Match.

/end
Great, I clicked on the link and I added another hit.
I'm not even remotely thinking of downloading that just because of the mis-spelled "Likin Park" for Artist. How hard is it to select the correct spelling of "Linkin Park"? He even uses the correct spelling in his comments:
It's another Linkin Park vid, but for Fullmetal Alchemist this time
And like that kind of comment would inspire me to DL and view it? I think not.

Anyways, I'm just disappointed that some of my favorite videos didn't win, but at least they were nominated and got more exposure.

point being... replace "Comedy" with anything and you'll get the same reaction... it's not just comedy.

If that is the case, then why didn't Jihaku take out 6 awards.
Its got a popular song, series' and everything else, its just not funny.
Unless you laugh at men with stubble practically kissing shiny old-style microphones while very high-quality anime portrays; well semi-appropriate stuff.

Or why did AMV hell 3 win over ROS2?

I'd say comedy helps a lot, if its funny people will like it more the first time they see it. Its like when you show a bunch of non-amv fans they'll be bored by euphoria & shounen boushido - but as soon as you put on AMV Hell 3 - everyone loves AMVs... (thank you to oropher for that)

All i'm saying is; If you perhaps want awards from the VCAs - try that formula. *smiles*

ok... 1985 won:

best fun
best comedy
best parody
best char profile

Jihaku doesn't fit any of those categories so how could it win those in the first place? Let alone, it got 4 awards including Video of the Year. would 2 more awards make it all better? what would it win? best romance? best lipsync? lol... there isn't much left for that video to win.

so why did amv hell win over ROS2? well in my opinion they both suck so i can't answer that one... well i wont say suck, but i didn't vote for them. All i know is that a lot of people like it and thats how contests works...

i'm saying the formula is flawed... Jihaku and 1985 both won the same number of awards... yet they are completely different videos. if you say comedy is the deciding factor aside from the other variables, i think you're wrong. especialy sinse jihaku beat 1985 out of several categories.

Ok, i see what you are saying now. Wow, i thought Jihaku only won 3 awards, i must have overlooked one. But i also think Suberunker winning best creator was also because of 1985. You're right that Jihaku could not win much more. But i didn't really mean it should win more...i meant a video like 1985 is more likely to win more.. I'm damn sure Jihaku got all the recognition it deserves. But maybe ISTIV's - The Race & Meri's - i walk alone - didn't. But what i meant was that if you have a formula like 1985 you're MORE likely to win all those categories you mentioned:
best fun
best comedy
best parody
best char profile

+maybe:
best lip-sync
best video
most original

And there are a few other obscure ones that are possible.
Anyway, overall i think you can't really deny that a comedy video following that formula IS more likely to win more awards then say; an excellent dramatic video --- however, this is not really a problem until it starts encroaching on territory like; Best parody, Best char profile - when there were obviously much better videos (designed for that category) competing.

I dunno. I guess my theory has lots of flaws..
For example, if my theory (actually its not really mine, i'm pretty sure someone else would've thought of this) - in fact i'm pretty sure i'm stealing from Arcane. But yeah, if "the" theory is right then ISTIV's - The Race should certainly have performed better..

I guess it doesn't really matter, but it also seems a little harsh when people dismiss it as "Thats just the VCA's" - i think that even "the VCA's" deserve a good ole chat. otherwise the aftermath would be so boring.
it'd all be "congrats tyler, congrats suberunker, congrats all, etc"

I don't really feel too strongly about this, i just thought. hey i'm actually going to try and talk about something on the a-m-v.org forums today - *smiles*

Wait a minute, you guys are actually debating about a formula?

Look, istiv didn't win because nobody thought of his video anymore, that's about it. Even though it was nominated the reviewing factor seems to have been too low to get enough attention at the end for VCAs and I'm very sad that this happened to him - because it's mostly mere luck. If View to a Kill were to be released right before VCAs it probably would've won something, as well as Dead to the World winning most artistic if Beo woul've left out a few key "horror" scenes. People are stupid.

You know it's easy to go through the forums and only click on the videos that gained 10 pages of replies, sadly most of these threads are filled with meaningless spam about lolis or 4chan quotes or other inside jokes from the IRC channel or whatever - and that only happens when it's a comedy/fun/parody/happy video, so there is a lot of attention given to those videos. We're at a point where every dramatic/emotional video is reduced to being emo anyways, so why care?

People always tend to try and find answers within the actual social group they're talking about but I think that it's not about this site that results like this come out this shitty, it's about how people and their minds influence the site. For example a lot of europeans entered the site more and more, when Animix, which I participated in, came out it was a new kickoff for the dance category and when people started mostly doing videos about breasts it was a big influence as well. The mentality of people decides what's in trend and what's not. That is because when you're skilled it's about how you use your skills, you want to entertain or deliever a message? Look at books, the best selling ones are entertaining bullshit or comedy stuff about women and men and how to socialize, the real good ones never get attention....well until some crappy movie is done to it.

When I think back in time, as soon as there were new emotional songs coming out you wouldn't wait 10 days and a pretty good AMV was done to it (Katie Melua, Norah Jones, Placebo, James Blunt). While the popular music was more and more decided by a more mature age group the one focused on animes grew less mature from day to day. It's a phenomenon you can't reduce to this site alone, it's how the world develops and how it influences the AMV world. And that is what you can't stop by yourself.

The thing about Jihaku is that it was purposely designed to be open to interpretation. So different people will get different meanings/reactions out of it, good or bad, positive or negative. Even when I watch it again, I pick up other things or notice things I didn't before. Plus, the editing and mixing of live-action into anime footage was well done. I think the only other video that would have given Jihaku a run for it's money would have been metro's True Fiction.

IMO, there were MUCH better parodies (RELEASE). Although 1985 DID use parodies of the musical artists mentioned in the song by portraying them with anime series/characters, I wouldn't classify the ENTIRE AMV as a parody. And what character was it profiling? Yukari? HA! Then that was the WORST Character Profile I ever saw. Maybe it was a parody of Character Profile AMVs? Now, don't get me wrong, I LIKE 1985 and voted for it for Comedy and considered it for Fun, it didn't show up on my radar for the other 2 categories it won.

As for AMV Hell 3, well, considering how many people keep asking about what anime is in this segment or what is the music in this other segment, I think it wins on popularity alone. And yes, I did NOT vote for AMV Hell.

Wow...Deep.
That was pretty serious. And probably the best call from today.
<--Considers myself served.

However. i never really meant for a silly little formula like that to be taken so seriously. its not like its a clear-cut guide to succeeding in the VCA's there are a million other factors that can contribute.

in my conclusion, the "formula" can work with today's 'influences' but as suggested in years time it may be different. But this year, it worked *smiles*

I need to stop watching DDR Projects while making long replies to forum posts so I don't mess up someone's reply like I did. :o

Oh don't worry. Hehe, it doesn't really matter, Ingow has probably left now after typing such a post, anyway.
And for the record "Release" was the best parody i've seen for a long time! That got my vote.
I stil voted for Istiv in the most fun though. But this isn't the place to chat about who i voted for hehe.

But yeah, if anyone does get confused about my previous post it was meant for InGoW's last.

Yeah, but when you put up a formula without a reason behind it people won't see a reason to change anything about it. When they got what they wanted they're happy and they don't care about what people rant about the VCA results. (Especially when they don't have much influence)

That's why I always think that it's important to view the whole issue from a social perspective that everyone has to care about. Still, they won't. There are a whole bunch of sentences you can use for yourself to defend the way things are going in the community, as well as the way the world is developing. I'm affected by this because my whole country is going to ruins right now and nobody gives a damn about it because the media tells everyone to stay happy about it. It's the same principle going through everything.

As an example on that, picture the worst boygroup, the one you always hated the most, or the song that was on number one you hated the most. Now imagine why everyone loved it and why you hated it. The fans of a certain boygroup will never admit that it sucks at singing until they get prove by some playback errors at stage and stuff. Or when they grow out of it, you're into something until you turn 10. That's not the problem, the problem is that people stopped showing the kids that what they like sucks. And that even if they do, even if they try, the kids don't care anymore. When I was young I was watching turtles and reading spider-man, kids today start smoking at that age.

There are so many bad V for Vendetta reviews that I'm actually having doubts about the intelligence of a whole country. It's the same principle: "OMG I DON'T UNDERSTAND BUT EVERYTHINGS SO DEPRESSING AND I'D RATHER NOT SEE IT SO FUCK YOU GOTHIC"

That reminds me of some ways of thinking in the old germany after war when everyone was all like "Hitler wasn't that bad.", "I didn't do anything.", "We didn't know shit.". While everyone was just too afraid to get oneself an own opinion during war. Kind of scary for me to see this kind of attitude return and even influencing the AMV community when I look at how much attention some types of videos get while others are completely ignored just because some people tell others to. It's like a whole turn into another direction was made by some kind of leaders and everyone just followed blindly. But I DO feel that there is a lot of aggression building up in this forums and in this community right now. From time to time I see more and more good points being made and really nice attitudes. That's why I even bother posting stuff like that, there could be some people who won't just ignored it because it feels depressing and stuff and "DUDE WHERE ARE THE HAPPY SMILIES".

I always do that because of the different time zones, since america is 6 hours behind I'm never expecting any direct replies :3
