OK, I can see Godix got in early XDDDDDDDD
What comes to mind -
1) Every critique is subjective, and you can't remove the person from the opinion given. Even an expert AMVer isn't saying "God's word" (whatever username they may have). I guess people need to keep in mind that it is simply someone's opinion, and another person may have a different opinion - that would make critique easier to take, especially if it's said in a way which focuses on a way they could improve, rather than simply saying "the AMV is no good".
2) It would be better if people giving critique can be sensitive to the learning curve of the person receiving it. Why not ask how many improvements the AMV author would like to hear? I've seen newbies have a load of specifics dumped on them, and it didn't help. Not professional.
In summary, make sure the supply of info = the demand for info.

qadir asked (and very politely too ) and so I thought I should respond.
How do I critique AMVs?
I think the honest answer is "poorly".
I am no technician which is to say, I can't nit pick, which is from my total lack of knowing how to actually make an AMV.
An "expert" opinion from me, would be no different than a quick blurb and a rating.
I try to always say how the video affected me (briefly) and then I give a 1 to 5 rating.
For the record, if the vid really sucked, I will say so. I tend to give a 1 for "it sucked" and a 2 for I really just didn't like it.
I give out a lot of 3s which is my way of saying you did a decent vid, but it came out like standard fare.
I give out 4s as my way of saying good job, and a 5 happens when I end up listening to it so often I risk pissing off my wife
So what makes a 5 for me. Well as stated above, it has to so likable I can't stop watching it. But for that to happen, I need to love the tune for itself, and the vid has to match the tune so damned well too.
A great song will not make a lame video great.
A great video will not make me like it if I hate the music.
And as I am an old fart, you can assume I will hate most common mainstream young people music.
I hate stuff that is beat me over the head amateurish, but if the amv was a nice effort I will put up with noob content like subtitles etc. But I won't like the same old content and you're insistence that such and such music group rocks.
If the music was poorly chosen, it will kill your vid.
Most of my 5s were considered 5s by everyone else long before I had heard it. I think half the stuff I vote for, likely was established years before I encountered it
I'm just a humble AMV fan, I can't make the things, I can only watch them.
But everyone can have an honest opinion.
I like the ones that are clearly art. I like the Meps the most it seems. I have amassed quite a few custom DVDs worth of stuff thanks to all you guys that know yer stuff.
You have my sincere thanks.
I promised myself I would be donating this year if I was still around. I spent most of 2007 greatly enjoying collecting.
When I get the chance that donation is definitely going to happen.
And all of you can consider it a collective thanks from me.
As the saying goes, put your money where your mouth is.
And a-m-v.org has been definitely a worthy experience.
I haven't been active on the forums lately. I was suffering from over all forum obsession though in recent years I was taking a break.
I hope my occasional blurb and rating has been of assistance. There are some very talented AMV creators around here.

Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

Thanks to everyone for participating in the online discussion. I perticularly invited some previous amv-review participants because I think how amvs are critiqued affect us very much, so the review benefits the most from the communities opinions on this.
Tonight will be a regular amv-review in #amv-review in IRC. Download links goes up at 20:30 EDT, and discussion @ 21:00 EDT.
I hope to see many of you there, even those of you just reading and not posting.

actually I believe that ppl don't know what they believe or who they are. And I'm usually right o.0 sorry for the late post but I could NOT resist.BasharOfTheAges wrote:It all really comes down to whether or not you believe in equality - people being judged by what they do, not what they believe or who they are.
