And here's my post reposted with tinyurls; if a mod can delete my first post, that'd be awesome.
http://tinyurl.com/3b3xqj = Flight of the Bumblebee, made for Jennifer Batten's tours
http://tinyurl.com/yr956z = music video of Tokyo
http://tinyurl.com/3xn5vw = comedic stopmotion music video
http://tinyurl.com/2kegph = weird, disturbing music video of a carnival, read the info
http://tinyurl.com/2q2h4b = a much higher quality/non-comedic stopmotion music video
http://tinyurl.com/2qvnxc = i can't describe this one... but it's probably the most creative out of all of the links i've posted so far.
http://tinyurl.com/2qh3zs = and yet another odd stopmotion video
When I say "music video" too with all of these, remember that i'm super, super anal with timing, so almost everything in the videos are timed to the music (or at least the points of emphasis in the music), with the exception of the Tokyo music video, where I was reallly lax.

Unfortunately, making a real official music video requires a bit more than a DVD and your basic editing software.Epical Zamora wrote:Seriously. Not true. I try to synch all of my videos with the beat as much as possible, same goes for any available lyrics, both real life AND AMV's.JaddziaDax wrote:real music video makers also dont have their nuts in a twist about "beat sync" and "lyric sync"
However, with real life footage (I own a SonyVX2100, so I use all of my own footage as well, with the one exception being the Flight of the Bumblebee video, because Jennifer gave me that footage), you can't do as many crazy effects in a short amount of time, because it distorts the image WAY too much, compared to what you could get away with on an AMV.

uh im talking about the people who make mvs for professional outlets like MTV very few of them seem to obsess over "beat sync" and "lyric sync" as much as amvers do
or I should put it in the way "amvers think things should be beat synced or lyric synced" - overall musical flow (or melodic movement) is one thing, cutting on every drum beat is entirely another.
they usually focus on one or the other... or go for something entirely different like CONCEPT (gotta love Cunningham and Gondry!)

Naturally. There is planning, shooting, effects, and everything else. But that isn't an excuse to slack on the editing. Music videos that concentrate on special effects are something of an exception.Esrhan wrote:Unfortunately, making a real official music video requires a bit more than a DVD and your basic editing software.Epical Zamora wrote:Seriously. True, which is why I hate 99% of music videos. I got into this career of making music videos because I feel that 99% of music videos (live action ones) don't even tap into 10% of the music.JaddziaDax wrote:uh im talking about the people who make mvs for professional outlets like MTV very few of them seem to obsess over "beat sync" and "lyric sync" as much as amvers do
There are exceptions of course, but it just bothers the hell out of me when I see a video for some song with a ton of drumbeat fills, or some crazy solo on a guitar, and the video's just doing some camera tilting and zooming in effects with nothing else going on, and some guy just standing there.
BORING AS HELL.
Or even more when a song's telling a story, and the video follows it (some guy walking around town and seeing hallucinations or something, i dunno) and all of a sudden, you see the band performing in some concert hall. KILLS the entire video for me because it breaks your suspension of reality and destroys the storyline.
You already know who the band is, why do you need to see them performing again on a video? A music video should either feature the band prominently during the whole video, or not at all. Doing a 50/50 mix just destroys the video in my opinion.
You have to be reasonable. As in, don't cut on every drumbeat, but if there are only two or three drum solos in a song, DO SOMETHING to them. Have a whole bunch of buildings sprout up around the main character in the video, each one coming up on a drumbeat, or have the character get his clothes changed part by part to the drumbeat, SOMETHING like that.JaddziaDax wrote:or I should put it in the way "amvers think things should be beat synced or lyric synced" - overall musical flow (or melodic movement) is one thing, cutting on every drum beat is entirely another.
Also, if you're doing metal videos, to heavy metal music, then it should really follow the intensity of the music. For example, if it's a Devin Townsend song, be kind of insane during some parts, but the rest can just be a normal flow.
If you're doing songs from his alternate band though, Strapping Young Lad, you better make it feel like hell itself is spawning to the viewer through the video. (and no, i don't mean through strobes; i stray far, far away from strobes. I like to time sounds to visual effects, not just a white flash.)
Now see, Chris Cunningham is literally one of my heroes, and I really do want to do creative stuff like him. Hell, if you notice, stuff like my video Controller (the one that's listed as a higher quality stopmotion video) is a slight nod to his work, as in, crazy stopmotion editing and super-anal timing to the music (like his Rubber Johnny video for example). I know it doesn't get anywhere near his awesomeness, but yeah.JaddziaDax wrote:they usually focus on one or the other... or go for something entirely different like CONCEPT (gotta love Cunningham and Gondry!)
