Youtube doesn't 'limit' the type of videos you can upload, therefore AMV creators who create other fan videos or whatever else, can keep one place where they have everything. I stated long time ago that we should have an option to post/list non-anime videos in our profiles. We can't host the videos here, but if this site was able to be a more comprehensive list of what I've done, it would be more useful. Youtube doesn't have the same cataloging or searching ability that this site has.

You'll find that creators who enter/attend conventions/contests, are more likely to have an account here, just to keep up with other creators. Your average kid who makes a video to show his friends, has a youtube account along with his video blog entries.

I also have suggested for a LONG TIME that we be able to 'archive' our older videos. Still have them listed on the site, even have them playable, but have them show up as 'Archived' so people know they are old and thus maybe crappy footage quality, etc... People could filter out the old stuff, and we can stop getting useless reviews on a video 5+ years old, and being told that our video quality is crap. This would also help so that when people search for videos they are will hopefully find videos that are more enjoyable/newer vs wading through all the crap. (Another problem Youtube has).

Basically the key is to make this site useful, and efficent in a way that Youtube isn't.

It was also brought down by spambots and technical problems which caused images to crash and burn horrifically, but I'd hope those issues would be relatively easy to avoid now, what with the popularity of Wikia.
Another problem, probably more fundamental than content foci or technical problems: most contributions, and contributors, sucked.

Scripts would do crazy things like jacking the saturation up by 150% for no good reason, or would fail to include useful information, like providing rationales or before/after examples. Submitted articles were rife with spelling and grammar errors, and often failed to adhere to style guidelines, requiring administrative intervention.

Crowdsourcing isn't going to yield fruit if the major component of your crowd doesn't know what they're doing, and in AMVs I'd wager that that's the case.

I could be biased; it's too bad I don't have a DB dump of amvwiki to confirm or refute what I've written. (Does anyone?)

Why yes, the Internet Archive does! (Or at least the front page exists.) Guess I'll take some time to refresh my memory.

Jumping into this a little late, but with some hopefully relevant comments.

I got into AMVs back in 1999, started making them in 2000, found the org in 2001. (I think) - Anyway, needless to say, there was no boochsack back then.

When Boochsack came out, and I found that my AMVs were on there without my permission, I made an account and uploaded all my stuff.

So, there's wordfilters on here that change the site's actual name to boochsack, or whatever. (I am typing boochsack because I just know better.) Apparentrly, for whatever reason, the admins here did not feel like embracing that new technology, despite that it is an amazing way to share AMVs. I think that was step one of the separation between the two sites. There was, from the get-go, a very anti-boochsack elite mentality going on here, and it surely caused many editors here to say "Well, I definitely do not want to put my videos up over there." - Why? Sure, it's a simple search, and doesn't have all the org's catalogueing features, but so what? Put a boochsack link field in the video entry! When you enter it into the catalogue, and have the option to upload it... have an option to link to the video on boochsack!

Boochsack is HD capable, so the quality argument is out the window. What we're doing is questionably legal and we don't want to draw attention to it... ok, so why is anime**ki still around? Why did B**Torr***s come back? They're WAY more questionable than us! Why the paranoia? It just makes for a more xenophobic community IMO.

So the whole point of my post here is that I think we should embrace the boochsack, Hosatchel, Turdbasket, whatever you wanna call it.

And yeah, that point on an earlier page of this thread about it being a trendy club/bar? Totally true. Very cliquey. It happens, it's human nature, but I think taken to extremes it can be bad.

I had a youtube account from early 2006 [which has been suspended] and I have had an org account that I recently found from 2006.
I actually prefer the org because of it's niche, but I believe people shouldn't shun youtube or any other video hosting sites.

Also, Shinnie brought up a good point that youtube is a stepping stone for younger editors. Youtube filters a lot of the crap [not all of it of course] from the org. I believe if an editor truly wants to improve then they will make their way to this site. I also don't mind the "assholes" on the org. If you cry over what somebody says then you should get a reality check.

I hope that youtube editors won't win future cons because I'll feel like we'll really fall in a rut of what amvs standards will be in the future.

There's always the important part (i.e. the whole fucking point) of google being a multi-billion dollar company that has the clout to make deals and fight court battles when the shit hits the fan with regards to organizations like the RIAA getting uppity. We have no such protection, influence, clout, or money. The anime companies don't care about us all that much. The mere fact that they offer prize support to AMV contests and feature AMVs on their sites from time to time proves this. It always has been the audio aspect and it always will be the audio aspect. Current US statues value a couple of CDs worth of music as more than a human life, and the music rights holders lobbies have shown they'll sue dead people and network printers to scare everyone else into compliance.
