Though i've been essentially raising that hypocrisy flag since the very first time i ever posted on these forums, you need to realize that until you commit death-penalty worthy crimes, committing additional crimes still add to the depth of the hole you dig for yourself.

theres also the fact that if you use the DVD then you have more control over what your footage looks like, where as raws will sometimes still sometimes have timestamps and tv logos, (random in-show news updates) and will have whatever filters that other people put on them... also on most dvds they will offer the textless opening and closing so you won't have credits hard encoded on to them.

Since what we (and by "we" I mean all of you who live in countries like the USA where the industry has a God-complex) really have to worry about is the RIAA and their crazy unrealistic lawsuits, so the DVD issue won't interfere with being sued for six thousand dollars per song.

I was going to mention that, lol. I'm sick and tired of record labels and the RIAA thinking they run the world. I can't wait until the system breaks down into splinters, and small personal labels become even more common. I predict that in 20 years time very few record labels will be anywhere near the same as they are now. The few large ones that will remain will likely be pretty much completely relegated to distribution contracts, where small personal labels control the music production and output. Of course, that's still in the future, and won't help us now, while the RIAA keeps suing people who are dead, or don't even own a computer...

That's one of the quirks of living in Brazil. No one gives a shit if we're pirating music because compáred to the North-American and European markets, the loss of profits here isn't that significant. Of course that doesn't make it right, but for our specific purposes I really don't care.

I was talking about this just a couple of days ago with someone who works in a movie store. He was saying that AMV's are not illegal because they are only using clips. It's when you copy full episodes or movies and give it to someone else that you are breaking the law. It is my understanding that once you buy something, you have the right to do what you want with it, as long as you're not copying it so that others can obtain it for free.

If it were illegal, cons wouldn't be able to hold contests for them, and dvd companies wouldn't add AMVs as extras on their dvds.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

MAKING an amv (from my understanding) from DVDs and music you bought is not illegal.

DISTRIBUTING an amv however technically is illegal. However there are people out there who would like to change that or at least hopefully set a fair precedent for it, because we are not just giving out free episodes/songs, we have remixed the two to make something new (or highly repetitive).

Plus you are only looking at one side of the issue: what of the music you use? MOST people don't edit the music at all. Unless you own the copyright to that song.

Anime conventions pay licensing fees to cover the music, and often times are funded by an anime licensing company, and THAT is how Conventions "get away with it".

Smaller ones tend to not realize they have to do this - especially if they don't have a dance - which is what the charge is usually thought to be for.

(Not to mention my program kept shutting down.) I tried to fix it, but it wouldn't save or convert the whole video and would only play halfway through. So I just stuck with what I had, is there anyway to prevent this in the future, or something?
What are the specs on your computer? What type of source footage are using? When was the last time you cleaned your computer (run spyware detection, anti-virus, defragmented, streamlined your start up group, deleted old or unnecessary programs...)?
specs? I was using an .avi file. Just recently.
My friend told me I'm out of RAM and I need to buy another gig...so I'm going to see if that will keep my computer from shutting down on me....thank you! :D
