I usually use AVI as a container format, usually with DivX as the codec, but sometimes I use XviD (although I've had mixed results) and I use the "Quality" settings to encode as opposed to a CBR setting. Is that bad?

Either that or MPEG-1 or -2. I like making VCD's.

I've read the majority of his plays and for the most part, there are quite a few sexual jokes in there. At the same time, B-grade porno is well...a bit more "in-your-face" then say a joke...I think I just de-railed the topic....

MPEG-2 RULES YOU FOOLS!
did you not see the hatter codec comparison where mpeg 4 clearly owned mpeg 1 at 2 mbps? Mpeg 1 and mpeg 2 at that bitrate looked the same :\

therefore mpeg 4 = owns you

additionally, black monarch is a moron. Xvid is far superior to divx even using the default settings and has the exact same level of support (if not more) as far as compliancy/portability goes.

MPEG1. One reason and one reason only: It is most compatible across different computers, and I am vainly trying to win the non-AMV people who visit my website over to the Dark Side of AMVing. ;)

Or just to get four viewers instead of two or three. You know, casting a wide net and all.

I use DivX and MPEG-1 for distro. As for while working, I use HuffYUV as my export codec, I use MJPEG while editing.

Oh yeah. And I hate XviD and it's incompatible ass.

I use high quality xvid encodes myself. Personally, I don't really want people watching a crappy quality version of one of my videos, as I believe video quality effects the overall viewing experience.

And geez garylisk, there's been enough misinformation thrown around already, don't you start it too! As Tab said, xvid is JUST as compatable as divx!

Still noone has answered my query. Is there a reason ppl use CBR settings as opposed to VBR Quality settings? I use VBR all the time and unless theres a good reason not to, I'm gonna continue to. Because I've noticed alot of advantages to it.

Funny, I've yet to come across a Windows or Linux machine with (only) DivX that can't handle my XviD files...and I'm definitely not an expert encoder :P

SS5_Majin_Bebi: You should use 2 pass encoding, the quality is greatly improved over a 1 pass encode.
The only reason to use cbr for anything is if you are making a vcd. Vcd must be encoded in cbr.

Actually surprisingly, I missed the entire Mad_Hatter stuff. Either way MPEG-2 is my favorite for quality...I *love* watching my vids in MPEG-2...as seen in Trythil's sig :).

As for the Black Monarch's statement...I agree. XviD is like 2x better than DivX. I do find it funny since XviD is just a sub-group of DivX.

I use Constant Bit Rate for my MPEG-2. In theory it means every scene will have the same (high) bitrate. It's generally not necessary (ie scenes that don't need it...not that much motion, etc.), but is an easy way to get the best possible quality encode. It'll be HUGE though :).

Happy?
