ah. sorry to essentially reiterate. Didn't expect anyone else who had looked into the matter to be working on a post at the same time.

Im incredibly shocked of what you think of as small. The org alone is 50k+ and growing. While its not as big as the users of kazaa the community of AMV creators is quite large. You take a risk that RIAA may do something in making an AMV, many take this lightly though and its up to you.

it's been said before..
this whole issue is FUCKED.

The RIAA (or as I like to call it.. the Rip-off Industry Association of America :P) can get fucked.

trying to control what people access these days is just outdated. there is ALWAYS a way around it.

I don't think they would try the org personally.
the risk would be too high.
while the org may be "small" in numbers.. consider how many people accually visit.

not that they scare me.
if they shut down my site.. I'll just change servers.
and because I use dailup.. my IP isn't static.

sure, they could demand my details from my ISP. but if they provide it, I'll sue my ISP for breach of contract and privacy policy.

What would the RIAA be risking by suing the org? All they could possibly lose from such an action would be public goodwill, and they've already demonstrated how much they value that, by other lawsuits in which they've sacrificed way more goodwill.

Not like they can sue you people anyway, they wouldn't get any money cause anime fans are notoriously poor (anime being more expensive than heroin and just as addicting).
Well, they didn't have any qualms about trying to sue my friend for 98.7 billion dollars a couple months back. For running a search engine, no less.

And was this search engine made to assist in the "sharing" of music files?

It was a search engine pretty much like any other, except localized on the campus network. You could search for anything: pictures, video files, music, documents, just like on a normal search engine. Hell, there's even a way to do it through windows itself, but I don't see the RIAA suing Microsoft. Why? Because they wouldn't win.

Basically, I liken the entire thing to suing somebody for selling maps of a city, just because somebody else used one of the maps to find a bank and rob it. They could have found the bank through other means, but the map just expediated the process, similarly to the FlatLAN search engine vs the windows method.

But I don't really feel like explaining every detail again, and it's not strictly on topic anyway. My point was, the RIAA are bastards who will go after anyone they feel they can get more money from. The org isn't immune.

so what can we do about it?

i mean really, lets stop bitching about it "DO" something. but what, thats the tricky question. we can just hope our good luck keeps up and we dont get targeted. yea right =\

lets just think for a moment, what would the comunity do for its self IF the org did come under attack? nothing really, Phade would go down alone cuz no one really CAN help him and the org. oh sure, all us that donated would probbaly be tracked down once the RIAA got ahold of the orgs bank book. but then what? they come to you next, and who do you turn too then? no one. fact is, the comunity here is balancing on a wing and a prayer. one good tip off that someone out their is making money *cough*Phade*cough* and its by by org. simple truth is, this comunity dosent have the power to defend its self from RIAA.

so what now?
