I just want to throw in a few points
A) If you don't want to see any specific banner again then get Firefox and the adblock plugin then right click on the banner and choose adblock image. It's just that easy. There's no longer any banner on this site that annoys me more than once.
B) WTF is up with this karma idea? If someone isn't going to leave an opinion unless they get rewarded then it's probably best if they don't leave opinions anyway. Hell, the most useful list is hard to find right now and there's already some people copying and pasting crap into reviews to appear on the list. Do we really want to provide more reasons for bullshit reviews just to boost someones stats? Take a look at this <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... >thread</a> and ask yourself is this type of thing that we need more of?
As a total side note, the 'gimme gimme gimme' attitude displayed by some users is one of the biggest reasons I don't give unsolicited opinions anymore. Fortunately I haven't encountered it much in my free op offers or else I'd quit giving ops entirely.

It's a nice idea, but I was more attempting to attack the issue rather than the actual banners (although I wouldn't mind doing that).godix wrote:A) If you don't want to see any specific banner again then get Firefox and the adblock plugin then right click on the banner and choose adblock image. I figured peer pressure and the ability to give quick ratings with the star scale would reduce useless opinions. However, you could implement more checks. First, you could set a minimum word count. Second, you could allow other people who posted opinions for a certain AMV the ability to rate other opinions on how pertinent they are. The grades could be something like: 0:Poor, 1:Average, 2:Excellent. If the grade for your opinion drops below a certain point (0.5 maybe) then something bad would happen such as your rating for that AMV would not effect its overall rating. The punishment couldn't be too bad because there still isn't any good insentive to balance it out.godix wrote:B) WTF is up with this karma idea? Yeah, the 800 banners like that on the site promote one of two things:
1) Useless ops for every video, or
2) Tons of hours logged away on ops.
Take me for example. It takes me about 30 minutes to write an op, maybe more, maybe less. My usefullness right now is around 700. I've downloaded 127 local videos, but one was my own to check if it worked. So that leaves 126. That's 88,200 words. I haven't written that many words for all the school reports I've ever given in my high school years, and possibly middle school. And that's just local. But this just applies to me, because there are people like Ari and MJ that are both more usefull and have over 300 ops.

My usefulness rating might not be up with all the 'greats' but I like to think that my reviews can be pretty good. I also usually have a free ops thread running, so I am already in a minority anyway.
I don't think any sort of system is really going to work better, or much better than what we have now. It's pretty straightforward.
Right now, we have two systems of OPs. One mandatory (The star scale), that has been simplified to the point of uh, simplicity. I'm not at all sure how effective it is, since the star scores don't really reflect the op scores that I see. The other system is voluntary, as in leave actual words that descrive your thoughts on what you just saw. I think that the more that the ops begin to 'require' a person to leave, the less people are going to do them. For example if the ops made you explain WHY you gave the video the breakdown that it did, suddenly: less people are going to want to explain that. On the other hand, the reviewers that care, always leave enough explanation anyway that such a system would be redundant for them. I don't agree that lots of those words means that it's a better opinion. I've seen lots of ops that have tons of copy and paste in them. That thread Godix linked earlier has an over the top example of just that.
Personally, I'd like to see a bit of control over the sorting of the opped videos, as it's a pain to see if the creator has read, or responded to the op unless you just happen to remember what score, or the name of the video when you check back. At least a three color system, so you can see what's been read already.

I think you may be reading too much into that banner, or, for that matter, the entire opinion system.
I write opinions because I want to, when I want to. I make them as detailed as I want to. The opinion system, as far as I can tell, has been entirely driven by personal desire, and I have no problem with that. You seem to be assuming that there is some obligation of members to give feedback to other members.
Also, there's something about that banner's aesthetic that I like. I mean, something like this clearly isn't as effective:
Neither is this, despite the fact that it's written in Japanese, which (for some reason) makes some people think it's cool by default:
So...yeah.

True, there is no obligation to give an opinion. But it is the desired outcome to recieve one, if not for personal gain and development, than just to see what people thought. Although you aren't obligated to give an opinion, but uploading a video to this site, you should be expected to take part (at some level) in the opinion system.

by no means do I disagree with you tryhil. I was only attempting to solve the dilemma. Again, I figure if insentive is provided that is not too intrusive or restricting then most will benefit.
I mean it is kinda ridiculous how few opinions are given sometimes. For instance, theres the "Through Time, Through Space" AMV by Koopiskeva. It's been visited over 10,000 times. Let's say a download by a unique member ensued for 30% of those visits. For that AMV there's only been 37 opinions posted. That's 1.2% of 3000. This may or may not be true for Koopiskeva, but I can see why some artists become dissapointed.
