Downloaded footage : is it ethical?

Seeing that previous posters are American/Canadian.. here's an opinion from yurope (yes, here be dragons and polar bears). So remember that this is my point of view, which most likely will differ a lot from others'.
First I'd like to say that I'm slightly amused by all this fuss about fansubs and AMVs. AMVs ARE illegal.. so to make them "more legal" with using DVD material is kinda.. you get the idea (hopefully). This was mentioned already.
Here's how my ethics go:
I think the DVD-issue with each AMV separately. Sometimes I have bought/borrowed the DVDs, sometimes I used fansubs. Main points that affects the decision are..
1) Availability - I live in the middle of nowhere called Finland.. next stop.. Russia (no offense). Anime that has been licenced here are way below 100 as far as I know.. most of them dates back to 80's. So most DVDs are imported. +Some newer series are only available in Japan. So animes that I have seen, I most likely have the fansubs already. Now gee.. that's a tough choice.
2) Quality - After you have read the reason above.. don't get me wrong. I do buy DVDs.. When that's possible. Reason is obvious. Better quality and much easier to edit (no minding those pesky subs in the way).

Then there is this "Down with the american corporate powers!"-thing, the "All dubs should be burned and people who make them maimed"-opinion and the "anime going mainstream is baaaaad"-obsession. These are my personal problems.. ignore that ^^' These effect the amount of support I feel american anime companies should get..

One thing also is that I have DVD-player.. not DVD-drive, so I have to annoy my friends to rip the DVDs for me.

Anyway.. what I missed to write.. thanks to an elder sister gnawing the chair, waiting to get a chance to read her mail:
I do AMVs only(well at least mostly) to myself.. What a selfless bastard I am. I very rarely force my creations to others. I just make them and let them be available for masses, be it illegal or not. For this purpose there's this nice place called a-m-v.org.. someone may even have heard of it. If it gets shut down for being an ultimate evil piracy haven which needs to be terminated in the name of national security... bummer.. I'll have to use my own connection to keep them available. If the same thing happens to our backward land of thousand lakes.. it's bummer/move on or doing time in prison where fat and hairy monster'll have hot lub with me, the enemy of the society number #25: t3h 3v1l 4n1m3 pirate..
and I better stop the mindflow before I start making less sense -_-

a) why would the dead horse ask you to stop beating it if you are supposedy criticising someone else
b) horses can't talk
c) nor use a phone
