AMV music, popular song = better chance of winning contest?

Theoretically, the video that works better with the song should win.

But reality is often like that if you hit the taste of people who are voting (audience or judges, doesn't matter) with your song and anime, you get ranked high or win, no matter how you edit.

Simply put, audio selection in and of itself is not going to hold much water when looking at the video as a whole.

There are awesome videos to crappy songs and crappy videos to awesome songs. The audio is only a part of the AMV as a whole.

I prefer songs I know, I usually know the popular ones in some form or another (whether I hate them or not I'll give them a try). Take DinaDani's Man, I feel like a Maid. Somebody said they hate that song but the video was just awesome!

Why would someone like a video when they don't even know the song?? I mean, it shouldn't stop anybody but it would deffiniteley put a damper on most situations. Humans generally prefer familiar atmospheres.

exactly and if your not familiar with the song (or at least the baseline) then your trying to listen to the music more and figure out what their saying (FIGURE OUT WHAT THEIR SAYING!!! I HATE STUPID STORYS!! I mean all my amvs are story based, but if it's not obvious than it's not worth it! DON'T PUT THE LYRICS IN THE VIDEO PAGE!! AAAH!). It gets annoying sometimes.

Let's turn that around- why would you like a video when you don't even know the anime it uses? By your reasoning, videos that use shows that we've never heard of or seen before should never catch on. And yet, I can count a number of instances where I've seen a video that used a show I'd not seen before and loved it and decided to track it down so I could see more of it. It's the same way with music. Yes, people in general may prefer things they're familiar with- but assuming that not knowing it is automatically going to put a damper on your enjoyment of it outright is not being human, it's being closed-minded.

Perfect example: Many of the videos Meri & Mike (VegettoEX) have made use songs by artists I've never heard of before by nature of their tastes in music. I'd hazard that many other people here and at cons hadn't heard of some of them before they made their videos to the songs. And yet, they consistently do well both in ratings here and at conventions. The same goes for Shonen Bushido last year- how many people had heard of Masterplan before that video came out?

inthesto had it right, you just applied your own distortion to it- you could have the World's Best and Most Popular Song Evar as your audio source, but if you do a crappy job of editing your video source to it than it's just not going to do that well. Conversely it's entirely possible to take a song that nobody has ever heard before and if you do a kick-ass job of editing the video to it, it stands a good chance of being well received.

I'm kind of the opposite of you in that respect, I guess. I love seeing videos that use sources (audio and video) that I've never heard of before because it expands my experience and knowledge and it's fun finding new, good music and anime.

note a damper isn't much. ever applied a cleaning filter to your video? Sometimes it's not even noticeable! Taken in the same context (as damper and filter are basically synonyms ;p), a damper may not mean much of anything. Don't over-extenuate the situation it's still a 'I may or may not like it' deal, it's just I tend not to search for songs/ animes I don't know.

In context of what this thread is actually about... does anybody really like Health class???

so, from what I gather for the most part, just run with what 'feels' good and damn the music taste of the (potential) voting audience...

cool - now I just got to actually finish the darn thing... now to edit down a 6 minute song in half to 3 minutes...

Nooooooooo. Don't kill the song. (Convention rules or something.)

This is why popular music sucks. Some artist even have it in their contracts that they cannot make a song over 3 minutes. That way it is radio friendly to maximize sell-ability. (Sell out bastards.)

I won't even buy a greatest hits CD. They are simply the songs with the most generic appeal to the mass.

Take Metallica for instances. The black album's Enter Sandman is one of their most popular songs. It is good, but most of the diehard Metallica fans prefer songs off one of the first 4 albums.

A lot of real great songs go unnoticed because they are not mainstream or have not so radio friendly formats.

As for your question yes a popular song will likely help you win the ignorant masses.

But, shameless ploys may get you the contempt of those whose opinions may actually have some validity. Most people are simply dazzled by all smoke and mirrors.
