I knew I wasn't the only one who did that.

One of these days, I want to make an AMV with some footage from every Newtype DVD I own, just to see how many anime I can put into one video. XD

And then I can be like.
"Oh. And none of this was downloaded."
or.
"And that is all my Newtype Subscription was good for."
I've done that. They make good classroom project disks since there are a million of them, and they have short little segments.
being sure to chop out the blatant "for promotional use only" or whatever the phrase is.

I don't see why people would get upset at using Netflix to rent and rip footage. In my case I HAVE a substantial library of stuff that I like... but there are times when I want a particular show say, Mao-chan, and there is no way in hell I'd buy it.
A lot of this particular hobby is slightly hypocritical. My theory is buy the stuff that you like, since it supports your industry, and you get to keep it. Rent stuff that you're not sure about, and download the shows that are only available in that medium (ie: hd raws). Bootlegs are a bad idea, not just because they are evil and all that, but also because the quality is frequently so bad that you might as well have just taken a whiz on the screen while you were watching it. (which I've never tried, and don't really reccomend)

I'll admit to renting for the Saiyuki video, but since beginning it I've bought most of the series anyway. And I'm not particularly proud of it, but it is an option. ("This series looks promising, but I'm not sure I want to sink a hundred bucks into a boxset", on the other hand? That's why Netflix owns me.)

I had a thought, though (wow) - the original companies get a cut of rental proceeds, don't they? In licensing fees or suchlike? I still feel as though I'm taking a step toward supporting the source by renting rather than downloading.

I do not buy anime unless it is for source. If I need source, I will purchase it. That simple.

I have no shame in using netflix. The more dvds I rent, the more they buy and distribute to the public. Their anime collection has gotten larger since I first signed up, so clearly I'm helping to promote the industry here in the states (me, along with all the other anime fans who use the source).

The only real issue is breaking the incryption on the dvd in order to use the source. We already do that whether we buy the dvd to keep, or buy it to use. I can't see anything good coming from this website suddenly deciding it can't with good conscience allow the use of legally rented dvds. It's laughable to even think about. With all the editors publically using sources only available by download, who are they to complain about renters who actually use their money to promote the US anime industry? Yeah.

I like anime coming to the states. But I don't like paying $30 a pop for 3 episodes per dvd, in a series with 200+ episodes. I'd much rather let Netflix legally purchase those dvds and rent them out to me for a fraction of the price. The US anime industry isn't losing money from me because I'd never pay to buy a series distributed that way to begin with. Either I rent it or I don't watch it at all. Which do you think the anime companies would prefer? I'm leaning toward the renters. If not, they wouldn't have let the rental company distribute their dvds, right? Oh, there's a thought.

It makes me wonder if there are groups protesting normal movie rental stores because the poor movie industry isn't smart enough to stop sharing its work with those who would rather rent than own. Somehow I doubt it. If they're going to get mad at people for using their sources, they won't care if you bought, rented, or stole the dvd.

Anyone who seriously thinks they're on some moral high ground over the renters needs a reality check. You might be morally better for having a bigger wallet, but if the copywrite owners decide to sue, you're going down with the renters, the bootlegers, and the downloaders because the only crime they care about is the use of their material. ^_^

I use Netflix to try out anime that interests me without me having to buy the 1st DVD. If I love the series, I'll buy all the DVDs and watch the rest as the ship to me (Planetes, Genshiken, and others). If not, I'll just keep renting the series. If I need the DVD for footage and it is a series that I'll never, ever buy, I'll rent for just the few clips I need (DBZ).

On that note, expect more KOR and some Maison Ikkoku videos from me. :P

Renting from netflix is not a problem. I don't think using footage ripped from rented discs should be a problem either, it would be no different than recording from TV or borrowing from a friend. What I would object to is renting dvds and ripping them to build up your own collection of anime. I have seen some people that have large movie collections they have gotten by ripping rented dvds. They tell me, "why should I buy some expensive set when I can just rent it and copy it?" If we all did that, anime imported to the US would come to a screeching halt. These companies need to recover the very large investment they have in licencing fees. They can't do that with netflix.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

My favourite source is youtube.com . It's just so easy to find footage and get it on your pc.

That's distribution, which according to most EULA's is illegal. Actually, buying a dvd and getting a few mates to come and watch it at your place could be breaking the EULA as it's deemed as "unlicensed distribution".

Hmm...that's about oppostite for me. I buy the DVDs for enjoyment, and most of the time I want to make AMVs about my favorite animes...so then I have them for AMVs and to watch. :)
