Oh, man... that Gator junk was awful. Yea, back in the day, Divx was the supreme definition of bloatware. Luckily, we had some good folks strip the good stuff from it and give us Xvid. It's gotten a little better... they've got some nice tools and, of course, the quality is great. And I'm impressed with their Firefox-first approach. Good on 'em. But I could certainly live without the inclusion of their trial software. Big thanks to Coderjoe for the workaround... very cool of you, sir.

If you are refering to and open-source, ad-free alternative to AIM, try GAIM. It does a large number of IM protocols, too, including AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and ICQ.unastrike wrote:I stay away from programs like AIM for the very same reason. Ideally I'd love to have an open-source, ad-free alternative, but I don't think that's even realistic.
Except that XviD is not derived from DivX. XviD is an open-source implementation of parts of the MPEG4 video standard. You're welcome. userscripts.org appears to be up again for the time being, but if it dies again, here is another link to it, on another server. (Their T1 line is a little flakey the last few days, so it might be unreachable for short periods of time. My avatar is also hosted there, fwiw.)unastrike wrote:Big thanks to Coderjoe for the workaround... very cool of you, sir.

Actually, in regard to the open-source, ad-free alternative, I meant in contrast to Stage6. Like an Xvid Youtube maybe (ooohhhh... there's that word again) . GAIM is great... it's my primary chat client on my Ubuntu box.
And, yea, my bad on the Xvid reference. I've always just considered Xvid to be like Divx-lite... same great taste, less filling.
But I'm totally off-topic. Let's get back to the Divx bashing and YouTube loathing.

I tried XviD with the DX50 4cc and it works.
I don't like them upsizing my video though. Anybody know what their vertical resolution is supposed to be? It looks to be 365, but that's not even mod16.
Anyway, I'm going to delete this test and wait to see how strict they are with their rules before uploading anything for real.

By the way... for some reason, the Japanese MAD creators are less shy about using stage6. There are currently 17 pages of videos tagged with MAD.

This is actually what caused me to write my download link script the other day, being able to download these easilly to watch them, without installing their crap. I am somewhat tempted to add a bit to the script to kill their script tag containing the code that creates the player object tag, which will prevent it being downloaded (part of the tag includes were to find a cab file containing the activex control).
