Subtitles are a good thing to avoid since they can be distracting sometimes.
Subttiles that you made yourself for the video are cool if done correctly.
Its probably a good ideal to make those external (I think thats how you say it) that way people can switch them on or off when they want to.
Its always good to follow the technical advise since it will help you get real nice quality and stuf.
As for anyone saying a certian anime or a song shouldn't be used, thats not a rule just an opionion.
Its true some sources are used ALOT but if you like it and want to do something with it, then do it.
You are making what you want to see and not catering to what other people like or don't like in videos.
Also don't worry if your cookie doesn't always turn out perfect.
I often eat undercooked, overcooked, and stange shaped cookies
just as long as they have an interesting flavor.
There are others that will still taste them too.
Have fun and remember
the content of your AMV is up to yoouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
Just jock on dem haterz
Make sure you follow the guides so you don't burn dat hoe though.

which is why I'd like to call them suggestions for a good presentation rather than "rules". Calling them "rules" denotes that their videos could be taken down, such as the no porn on the local server rule, or the no overly bloody violence rule.. (though you can still make videos with porn and violence, you just can't host them on the org servers)Ileia wrote:Certainly you are not forced to follow these "rules", but they give your video a better chance of being taken seriously.
Although also suggesting that those "rules" only apply to the org is kinda silly as well... Yea other places might let you get away with a sloppier presentation, but you should hold yourself to higher standards no matter where you distribute your video.

And yea, they can suck as much as they want, but that doesn't mean that we have to like it and they will get lots of repetitive feedback if they continue to have a sloppy presentation.

Not sure what moonie211 means by switching subtitles on or off, but you can add your own subtitles to the video for more humor, either like a real subtitle on the bottom of the screen, or even in a text balloon (if your editing program or other program like Photoshop is capable of that). I've seen quite a few amvs that have that.moonie211 wrote:... Subttiles that you made yourself for the video are cool if done correctly.

"Didn't I say something clever earlier?"

Yeah,JaddziaDax wrote:I believe in an mkv container you can make the subtitle stream separate from the video stream, that way people can choose weather or not to see the subs..
thats what I mean by making it so people can turn them on or off.
Its good to use if you wanted to show the lyrics of the song used in a video or something.

The amv technical aspects are rules in the same way thatt ending a sentance with a period or putting " marks around something a person said are rules. You don't have to follow them and there are many places on the web where people don't care if you don't. But people who actually have a clue what they're doing will consider it a big flashing sign that you don't know shit about writing (and before someone else points it out, I know how horribly I butcher the english language. I don't care. Then again I also don't go on writing sites and act like they're elitist for knowing and caring about those rules).
In the same way you can leave subtitles in or use the wrong AR and there are many places where people won't care. But those with some clue about video editing will consider it a big flashing sign you don't know shit about editing. So the 'rules' of amvs would be:
- Deinterlace
- Use the best looking source possible, which usually means DVD.
- If you can not use DVD for whatever reason then make an attempt to remove watermarks, subtitles, and clean up the footage some.
- Get the fucking aspect ratio right.
- Compress your audio.
You can violate any of those rules if you want but keep in mind that e.e. cummings of the world who violate the rules for artistic reason and still produce something good are very very rare.
As far as using 'my first video' in the announcement, that'll do two things. First off it'll make a lot of people skip right past it because the vast majority of first videos suck. A lot. Second off it'll have a better chance of some good hearted fool explaining nicely what you did wrong and how to correct it in the future. If that's what you want then use the phrase. If that isn't what you want then don't.
