Re: Most popular AMV Music genre?
I'll take the contrary opinion. Yes there are many genres that don't work unless you are a very VERY good editor. Most people probably couldn't work with anything except rock & love ballads. The number of people on this site that could do justice to jazz, folk music, blues, gospel, etc. could probably be counted on one hand.Takuu wrote:Any music genres that defiantly don't work in AMV's?

you are acting like the rock/love ballads that are made by not very good editors are good. thats an odd sentiment coming from you.godix wrote:I'll take the contrary opinion. I'm sticking with my original position, No. there is no musical genre that "defiantly don't work" in an AMV.

Re: Most popular AMV Music genre?
Don't read more into it than I said. I do not think most rock/love ballads are good. I think they're easy to do well enough that people (besides me) won't say they suck balls. If you watch amvs and see what other people do you pick up on what does and doesn't work for that genre, at least subconsciously. For example, after awhile you get an instinct on where to do cuts and can tell when they're 'wrong' even if you never sat down and analyzed why they're wrong. So if someone, even a not very good editor, watches enough videos they can emulate the basics well enough to not totally suck donkey dick. Since the vast majority of AMVs are to some sub-genre of rock or love ballads that's what the marginally talented will pick up on and be able to do.Fall_Child42 wrote:you are acting like the rock/love ballads that are made by not very good editors are good. thats an odd sentiment coming from you.godix wrote:I'll take the contrary opinion. On the other hand there just aren't enough reggae/wagnerian opera/big band/gregorian chants/etc to pick up the basics of that style just by watching vids. Instead you have to have talent and know what you're doing to pull them off to even a 'eh, it was ok' degree. If someone tries who doesn't have talent or knowledge it ends up as a video edited for rock music but put to non-rock music and that just sucks. I don't think there's more than a couple dozen people around here with that much talent and knowledge of what they're doing. Once you eliminate the ones who could do it but have no interest in it you get my original statement, the number of people on this site that could do justice to jazz, folk music, blues, gospel, etc. could probably be counted on one hand.
Which is all a long way of saying that even though I took part in a project that proved even something as unusual as just reading numbers can be edited to I still think you'll sooner see Santa muff diving the tooth fairy than you'll see a decent unusual audio source amv. So technically anything can work but realistically if it isn't rock or ballads it's gonna blow worse than a hurricane hitting New Orleans.
Note: non-mainstream music done for comedy is the exception here, but even then most people aren't nearly as funny as they think they are so it usually still fails.
