Re: The better the editor, the better he/she is at sex?
I'd say there are editors who edit and watch amvs with the rhythm in mind, and editors who edit and watch amvs with different things in mind.
It just means that the two types of editors will have a different opinion on the same work. The one type will be really moved by a piece that follows the dynamics of the music nicely, while the other type won't be able to appreciate it at all, maybe because they feel the scenes don't follow the lyrics as closely as they'd like.

You've never seen me dance or you wouldn't ask this question.Douggie wrote:Don't mind the thread title, that's not what this is really about.
I wanted to make this topic since last year, when I was with some AMV-editors in Chicago at a concert.

Re: The better the editor, the better he/she is at sex?
I grew up in a home filled with music. My mother sang. My siblings and I all learned to play the piano. We all sang in the church choir and I joined the band in school (my siblings joined the choir.) For me I have always enjoyed making the music, and as such I prefer to listen to music for the melody, rhythm, harmony, ect more so then the lyrics (while I do enjoy lyrics and singing them from time to time.) I always have music playing. For me silence is just deafening. I sleep to music, wake up to music, spend my day listening to music, even my memory is triggered by music.
I usually really get to know a song before I sit down to edit it. I know it's in's and outs, it's melody, harmony, beat, the different parts, instruments, quirks of the singer(s) voice, ect. I generally get my AMV ideas from listening to a song that really pulls on me in some way. I'll sit in my chair or lay down on my couch with the lights off and my eyes closed and let the music shape my imagination. It's from there that I choose the source(s) and what the video would be about and what kind of video it would be.
I can't speak for other people, but what really drew me to AMVs was the music and how someone can add the video to it in a way that enhances the music. I admit, I'm a fan of many videos that most would consider horrible (video quality and editing wise) all because of the music used. I sing, dance, bob my head, tap my feet, ect. while watching AMVs. I'm sure any of you who have been around me in the VAT at ACEN or AWA or otherwise will have seen this. Not sure if this makes me a better editor then anyone else, but at least for me I appreciate the music.
tl;dr... maybe?

With the right person sex can be quite sophisticated Thus, you can also have sex to sophisticated music then.Otohiko wrote:Likewise, one of my criteria for good music is "you can't have sex to it". Music that is well-suited to sex is as sophisticated as a brick. That kind of music is usually aimed at lower parts of people, and is not meant for listening, i.e. is trash.

There are different ways to sync to a song. How an editor uses the syncs and its outcome is subjective.

This thread makes me wonder where the photos of Extreme Iron Editor from this year went.

I see the music video editor as another member of the band. Each player has a part to play and it must be done in perfect time with the other band members otherwise is discordant rubbish.
I am a musician, however, not not a great one, but my knowledge of timing helps tremendously. If the song is in 4/4 then I set scenes in blocks to match that 4/4 time.
I think the most valuable thing for an editor is 'feeling' and a sense of timing.
