What do you do to psyche yourself up?

Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.

After 1 Beer I find myself editing betterAbsoluteDestiny wrote:Dunno about vodka, but a nice red wine is really good for editing up to a point (and then it just becomes destructive )
After 6 Beer at least I think I can edit better
After 12 Beer I am the God of Editing and all shall bow down before me mad skillz!
After 24 Beer... there is no editing, or computing, or walking, maybe crawling, but that's the Canadian way!
Man I could use a good Rum and Coke right about now.

Re: Vodka?
Sorry for the double post.Akai Rurouni wrote:Ok, so I have to ask... I've only been on the AMV scene for a few months, but I've seen several references to vodka. What is it with vodka and AMVs??? Is there some kind of inside joke or reference to something I'm missing, or is it just purely by coincidence the alcohol of choice here? =)
If you're looking for an inside Vodka joke you can check up on an old AWA story about Hsien Lee (Kusoyaro) involving Sprite, Vodka and Iron Chef Editing.

Get started on them, and then 'take breaks' from it by doing other easy videos. Whenever I look up on the wall and see the production flowchart I get depressed at how few items are checked off. To cheer up I do other stuff, and piss off my students by making simple little showcase projects.
So, I basically take the ass backwards approach.
Damm, that reminds me... I have to get that baby shower crap edited.
A production flowchart is just a written sequence of stuff that needs to happen for a highly detailed video. Most videos wouldn't need anything beyond say, just a general idea of what you want to do.
The problem arises when you start working on major peices that have a lot of very distinct parts. For example: In my inuyasha video, I need to have a phone come flying out of the well and smack him in the face. Tor this particular shot I need
1) to find the right angle, of inuyasha getting hit by say, a punch or something (to simulate the phone hitting him)
2) to clean up that peice, remove bad guy and replace elements so the phone looks seamless
3) a followup of an anoyed expression
4) a CG phone
5) To render the phone going through all the appropriate actions, and color corect any parts that don't match the style of the anime
6) To composite the scene together, clean up any grungy stuff
7) Save out the complete rendered peice in huffyuv to be edited in later.
Say I'm in a Lightwave, or Poser sort of mood. I look at all the peices that will require my using that program and pick one that needs to be done. It might lack that certain "magic" but it gets all that parts of the job done.
This dry erase board above my desk I have a timeline, and specific parts that require a lot of work. When I have the major peices all mapped out I can just pick them and work on them in a non linear fashion. When each one is done, I just put a big red "X" on it.
It's pretty old school, since I used to use the same deal for putting together CG shots for the effects house I worked at. It sounds complicated, but in reality, it's just a way of looking at the overall project.. You could for another example have stuff like: "use episode 37, 45, 67, 128" as one of the elements once you've found the scenes you want, then you could just rip those eps, and cross them off.
--------------------------
In reality, I tend to overextend myself (or maybe just lazy) in terms of project complexity. These massive projects usually (unless I'm being paid) take me a long time. I have a tendency to look at it and say, "to hell with that today, I'm just going to do a hellsing video with lots of swearing."

Re: Vodka?
I'm actually part russian (and part scottish) so the vodka thing comes quite naturally to me. Vodka and Whiskey are about the only kinds of alcohol i can actually stomach. I totally hate beer and don't like wine. About the other editors, i have no idea. My vodka drinking habits even gave me the nickname Rasputin when i was on vacation in Jamaice, but that's a whole different story.Akai Rurouni wrote:Ok, so I have to ask... I did hear that Hsien made a (one of his best i might add) vids under the influence of vodka (the Maxwell Murder vid).

Hmm, pshyche up, I've never tried that before. Normally I just keep working and trash the end result. But, on the plus side I have managed to waste a bunch of time. However you might be on to something with this pshyche up thing, I'll give it a try next time. But no drinking. I refuse to let Jack Daniels interfere with my artistic vision, that's TV's job.
