Thank god you don't make hentai AMVs, huh? ;P

I used to think that I had to plan a lot, but lately I'm thinking that I may be better off letting it stretch as necessary. Though you can do both - plan, and be ready to change.

But what I do, once that initial "hey, what if..." thought comes up, is to rip the song and leave it in my ever-expanding "ideas" folder until I'm ready to work on it. I'll listen to it every now and then and add vague notes in the Text File Of Doom that will eventually mutate into my video description.

If it's going to be complicated I'll break it into sections and plot it in chunks like so:
Sarah's notes for current project wrote: 0:00 - 0:15
Possibly black or imposing scenery with quick shots of [name] on the drum hits. Sort of a "suspense" intro.

0:16 - big sploosh into the song.

0:16 - 0:39 [first verse]
[name]. totally. "[lyric]," totally [name].

0:39 - 0:50 [transition]
[names] attempting to be badass, with increasing [name] pissedoffness.
...and so on.

Which is vague - I don't cite clips in this yet, ideally. And this can change at any time - matter of fact, that intro? Totally different already. I ran across a shot I Just! Had! To Use! and the original concept went out the window.

But anyway, I plan in text. yes. the end.

The disadvantage of this is that you have progress resembling one clip every two weeks or so.

I have two editing modes:

The first is the "I care what I'm doing" mode, where I get the lyrics, break down the timebase and assign characters or chracteristics to parts of the song for consistency. Then I start taking the patterns inherent in the music and matching them to the footage. Video effects are planned to match the overall theme. Usually I hand write conceptual notes in the margins on the lyric sheet with references to timeline markers in the project if I need the story to have internal coherency. If I have a big effect planned out, sometimes I'll storyboard it if I need to do some CG.

The second is the "I'm just screwing around with stuff on the hard drive" mode. Then I just get stuff, say for example the barry manilow 'love boat' song, and put it to Last Exile or something. Video effects are done 'on the fly'.

Both systems seem to work equally well.
