hmm,

I would say a cool concept, the vid could suck ass but if the concept is good I would still have to give it credit. Take the AMV 3 Trailer for instance (I dug the background :P ), or that long 7 min vid Tom the Fish made for AWA in 2003 that constantly repeated 7 different scenes in different variations...

Other then the concept I like flow a lot, if it flows good I'll usually admire it by rewatching it a few times. The more times I do that the more I tend to like it.

Then I guess it would be a few things that surprise me, like a moment in the video I just have to rewatch cause it wowed me. I've seen some rather crappy vids with these types of moments so thats why I've rated it third.

And thats that.. until I think of something else that impresses me.

Clear visual and quality art always gets my attention - like anything drawn by Yoshizuki Kumichi, and Shinkai Makoto's recent anime.

How well they carry the theme or emotion of the video.

What impresses me the most is the emotional impact a video can have on me, due to a great editing mostly.

An original and well executed idea.

...pretty much, except I just turned 21

I do, I do!

I can also be totally sold by 'flow'. Just, you know, when instead of stretching the whole audio-visual-conceptual match, the video is just tight as hell and it's as if all parts of it were made for each other. There's a few videos I like in this way. Sensory candy I suppose, but hot damn!
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I love it when an AMV makes me want to go watch or re-watch whatever anime they used.

Well-done timing is always a good thing.

And I'm a sucker for using footage to make it tell a different story than the real anime (when it's done well).

Example: Meri Cantoni's Deceptive Passions
Yeah, the AMV thesis....that was me.
