His view is the general view of AMVs. If I ever encounter someone, a friend or coworker, and mention my hobby, if they've seen one, their response is, "....oh."

We've seen the good ones, so we know the difference, but the columnist (??) is right. Most of them are crap. Look at the number of videos we have on this site. And most people haven't been to this site, they've just happened to see an AMV on youtube. And I'd say they have far more bad AMVs than we do.

Yeah, it kinda sucks when everyone says "Aww, AMVs suck", but we just have to remember that youtube and the like is all they ever see of it. Few good videos make it to youtube, and those ones do are offsync after the compression during the uploading of the videos.

And about not being creative, considering what he's seen on youtube (he didn't mention this site, so who knows if he's even been able to see a good quality AMV), to him, no, they wouldn't be creative.

Everone says the opposite of where I worked before. I was in the Navy and everyone I've ever shown amvs seem to loved them(maybe I just have good taste??) I've shown at least 30 or so people and never once has any of them said they don't liked these fan made products.

If he is only seeing these videos over at youtube then it's natural to think they all are crap. I've ranted a bit about that place because I had a shit hard time finding good videos. Even on the top 20 list of most watched and best rated videos there I saw one of the worst amvs on it with divx logos, subs, horrible synch yet it has a 4.5 out of 5 rating. He probably decided to write that after running into the video on the top 100 list (JK)

Forgot to mention it was a naruto video. And like I've said before in an other topic that mentioned youtube, every amv there has 4/5 stars, well the naruto ones anyway.

Ah, but that's people that you've shown AMVs. If you allow them to find them on their own, they'll most likely find crappy videos before any good ones.

Yeah, now with the tube, a lot worse rep is going towards amvs in general. When most people rely on this site, they are more likely to be in for a tasty treat.

I find it rather amusing to read all this stuff about
lack of creativity and IPs being infringed while at the
same time using GiTS and Howl's Moving Castle
to advertise his column.

I don't really give a damn what people talk about AMVs. I like some of them and that's all I really need to know. And if people like crappy naruto vids with the DivX logo I'm happy for them because they can enjoy thousands of vids unlike me with my "refined" taste that accepts somewhere around 5% of the vids as WATCHABLE.

I'm not someone to point a finger with a feeling of superiority at some dude drooling over a linkinballz vid thinking he's an idiot for liking this crap(well, okay, I do that sometimes  ). Hell... I envy them

As for creativity? Hell... For something people do for free, just as a hobby, I think it's on a decent level. And I don't really think it's suppressed in some system of the majority of people disliking change and whatnot. The forums actually seem to be opposing mediocrity and repetition(well the forums are representing just a small part of the AMV watching and editing community, but still).

In the end IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER...
erm... it's just AMVs.

That is too long of a post to end it with "IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER"
