On-Topic:
I make a video first without any mental restrictions on what to do/what to put into it and then I just decide between putting it on the org without announcing it, putting it on the org with an announcment or just leaving it on my HDD for myself only (or only announcing it on the german AMV forums). I guess as long as I don't want to just put all of my videos on a general youtube site it just makes most sense to think about where showing a certain kind of video would even make sense to begin with and then the viewers can deal with it however they want.

Personally, ever since I edited my Wasteland video (shockingly, it's been over 4 years since that), I've been addicted to audience reactions - but in the opposite way that some might assume. I like getting reactions from audiences that I never intended. That's part of why I've shamelessly exploited weird audio sources and gone to some of the odder parts of my listening range. I fully realize the audience probably won't have the same stance on music or 'music' I have in my videos, but I've taken this to be a fun inevitability. It's fun to screw with people's expectations a little. I appreciate it when people come to see things my way, I tolerate negative reactions. But the best response for me is one that I totally didn't expect but is still positive.

What I really aim for with editing, I guess, is simply to be structured. Once a video is structured, upside down both ways though it may be, people can start reading things into it. I don't care what people read into it, I just want them to start reading in. Or I want the video to start screwing with the audience's collective head. Watching a con audience watch some of my weirder stuff has always put a big grin on my face.

Well, I make normal story-type videos on occasion, but those are usually to satisfy my own need to have a video with that or other song. I don't nearly get as much a kick out of reactions to these.

As far as audience generally, I think the principle should be that they're a part of the creative process, and I'd much rather their part be actually creative. Watching a video shouldn't be like solving a crossword puzzle or memorizing patterns. It should be, well, an active act. If a video has the best-planned story in the world and fails to engage - well, it fails generally, IMHO
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I guess if there wasn't an audience, who would be critizing my work or praise it to heaven I wouldn't even bother editing. Fortunately there are friends and this community, which constantly give feedback and watch the stuff I make. If they are entertained by my work and see pleasure in seeing it than I am pleased as well. There is nothing better than people, who except your unusual hobby x)

As for the source: I try to make my story and I hardly ever go with the story of the anime when I edit. I try to create something new. Something which hasn't been seen before so that I can show what I thought of when I listened to a song.

I guess it really depends on the project in question. I've run the gambit from loosely defined montage of emotion to story driven pieces, those made because I wanted to entertain people, those made because I wanted to try new genres, and those made because I wanted to experiment with new effects - and this is me... someone that really hasn't made that many videos. I guess I really can't answer the question as I haven't settled into a pattern yet. Maybe that's the answer then...

As for people finding stories where there aren't any... if it makes them happy I suppose it's not a problem. Artsy focused folks often feel like they have to analyze everything to death - it helps them forget the pain that their degree got them a job at Starbucks.

"Hey, this might look cool, I might enjoy editing it"

- is pretty much what goes through my head, if I don't see myself enjoying the process, I probably won't make it, or I'll throw something really mediocre together to get it over with. I think that might be why I particularly enjoy Iron Chefs, because the time/source restrictions are entertaining enough to get me to enjoy the edits.

Or something.

Granted, feedback is great, I don't think there's any question there, but I won't make a video just in order to get feedback.

So far, no one has told me that they recognize the storyline that I have carefully woven into the AMV Hell series
Perhaps it's just that it's a bit too sophisticated for the primary audience who watches it, but I've put so much blood, sweat, and tears into crafting such an epic story filled with comedy, tragedy, adventure, love, and rejection, accented with recurring themes of rebirth and liberation.

"Getting" a video depends a lot on what the viewer is bringing to the table...and since we don't know the innermost psychological workings of everyone who's ever going to view our AMVs or have absolute control over what they take away from our AMVs...

Wait, what was I going to say? Oh yes: you can't please all the people all of the time. Worry about pleasing yourself first - if that means making an AMV that also pleases other people, then that's fine - it's just probably going to take a different approach. If you're trying to make an AMV that lots of people will "get" and they don't "get" it then yeah, you're going to be unhappy with what you've accomplished, but if you don't care about other people "getting" it as long as YOU "get" it, then all's good.

I'd say most editors are happy when other people understand and enjoy one of their AMVs - that doesn't mean that was the most important thing guiding the creation of an AMV, though. Me? I'm out to prove to myself I can make something, whatever it may be. As long as I succeed in doing so - regardless of how "good" the end product is - I'm happy. If other people also get a kick out of what I did, then that's a nice bonus!

I make my videos for whomever can understand them.

First, I make what makes me happy. But making other people happy sometimes makes me more happy. So my editing viewpoints goes back and forth, feeding on each other until I feel little improvement can be made.
