Are we killing it? Yes and no.
I saw so many hobbies that died because people wanted more and more and yes it´s the same here with AMVs, but we have the great advantage that a lot of people just start editing just for the joy of editing itself. Ah yeah of course we want a lot of stuff from newbees, but overall there still come new guys. Oh well... If YT would just be a place where shit isn´t that overrated :)
This community is very strong connected, I doubt that the end is near already.

Are we expecting too much from editors themselves?
Of course most of us do! I just take myself: better, faster, tighter editing, more fx, more content. After a local contest and some debats with the major audience I stepped back from the tighter/faster stuff and I´m happy I did. I still want to develop myself in a ot of things, but still think/get the ideas for more simpel vids.
It´s often just the plain: I want to impress other editors with tighter sync and more fx. That can´t be such a good way right? I want to entertain more the wider audience and a flashgasmn isn´t the right way for.
btw. it´s pretty interessting to think/plan/and make good videos that suite the editors and the major audience site. Brings up a lot of new thoughts.
I still make stuff that´s absolutly my taste. :)

Are we over-complicating matters?
Mhm... Yeah somehow. A lot of drama could be spared.

It´s like watching Indiana Jones 4: Don´t think about too much about what you´re seeing. Just enjoy it. Ok it´s not that easy to come down...

"I edit because I enjoy it and for no other reason"
Ah. Of course we want praise from other people. Natural, I guess.

@Ingow:
Yeah that´s for the general userbase here. I think for the more advanced and deeper org user it´s: "I download good videos. I´m not searching for those with my favorite music or anime. If one of these elements is in one of the "good" vids I´m just a lucky person."

Ah too much complaints. Just sit back, come dawn and learn again about how to enjoy stuff.

@contests:
A lot of people just edit for contests. I see it in Austria. We have tons of talented people, but hardly anybody makes more than one vid (for the major amv contest here) in one year. It is sad, but whatever! I mean most of the make the vids for fun and for presenting theire stuff in fron of a audience.

Alright. In the end the two vids that I enjoyed most in the last months:
Warheart´s Remains of Oblivion: Intraday Dereliction
Phantasmagoriat´s Not another fanservice AMV

As to whether or not matters are being over-complicated... Well. That would depend entirely on how complex you think matters should be, wouldn't it? The endless series of threads like this one probably aren't helping, though.

I think Prodigy is a pretty cool guy. Writes insightful topics and doesn't afraid of anything.

Well, this is pretty much what's happened with every AMV I've ever
made.

Of course, contest judges don't agree with me, but contests are more
for showing the video in public rather than winning prizes. So, as
long as you make videos you like, I don't see a problem.

What fucking website are you downloading videos from? That shit seems to be a rarity around here.

He has a point. It's easy to forget sometimes, especially when you're hanging out on the forum, but the fact remains that the vast majority of videos on this site are made by people who don't care about any of that.

I'm not necessarily talking about the vast majority of videos, but rather the vast majority of voiced opinions on videos. A dip into an announcement thread, or video page, usually finds the most notice going to those videos that are "lulz technical". Even if you make a BAD effects video, odds are you're getting more notice than Mr A/B Phade editor

Speaking as someone who's still new to the community, I definitely get the impression that many of the people who post in my announcement threads have seen too many vids, to the point where they're just looking for something zany or with some cool new effects that they haven't seen before.
Myself, I try to make vids that don't cause eyestrain from rapid cuts or strobe effects and the like, and a significant percentage of people here just dismiss that as boring. Of course, everyone is perfectly entitled to like what they want, and as an editor you have to do it for yourself first and foremost, but it's still a little depressing to see how it seems to be the norm not to give more than a 3 to any vid that's not zany or that doesn't have a "hot" factor (hot song, hot anime or hot fx).
Just trying to tell what it's like being a newbie these days....
