Sorry that I'm jumping in so late on the thread, but...
-Linkin Park is my favorite band...and as much as I like listening to them even I recognize that they are overused in AMV's...which brings me pain but understanding.
-Evanesence has something like 3 good songs, and all three of them have also been used to death.
-Unique song choices can and often do make an AMV stand out...I saw an AMV done using footage from Oh my Goddess the movie set to the track "Mehndi Set Diamants" from Moulin Rouge. It was pretty damn good too.
So in conclusion, I have made a concientious decision to stop using Linkin Park and Evanesence in my AMV projects. I invite anyone and everyone else to do the same, and instead seek out interesting alternatives.
...
Apologies in advance for any typos and mispellings, I am a lazy poster.

Kinda makes you wonder why it's worth the effort.
But it's more a question of how well you used the anime/song to make people notice it. I tend to stick with more older and/or not well known songs rather than the new..and overall I think I've had a good response to the vids I've made with them.

I think that's false, through and through. True, not many people will download the video based solely on the music choice if they don't know it or don't know much about the artist (if anything), but there are plenty of songs/artists I wouldn't even know about if it wasn't for this website and the videos that I saw using them. And some of those videos are pretty well-known, whether it was because of the fact it was one of the insanely popular editors that created it or because the video had so much merit to it that it deserved having as much praise that it did (and inconsequently made the editor that created it insanely popular).

Although I do believe the best videos here are a 50/50 split of the ones that take an overused artist/song and put a new spin on it and those that use unknown artists/songs. I mean, there's only one video on this site using Angie Aparo (who I remember from 'Spaceship' back in 2000, but not many other people do even though Faith Hill did do a cover of his song 'Cry' that became really popular 'bout a year ago). That video is really good. I mean, if an editor has the guts to go out on a limb and use a song virtually no one has heard of, they generally will back it up with fantastic editing so that the video leaves an impression on people, and I'd say that's worth more than anything else, even getting into the Top 10% (even though that is pretty nice). :)

I find that the visual component makes it easier to enjoy songs or genres you don't like.

On the flip side you have to be careful with your song choice. You can do an AMV and everyone will agree that the song fit the concept perfectly, but if they don't care for it, then their opinion of the AMV might be lower, especially in terms of re-viewabillity.

Umm... nope. :? Just like a song can be overplayed on the radio, it can be overused in AMVs. You could make the argument that with AMVs there is the additional conceptual aspect that the anime introduces, but that doesn't make the song any less overplayed.
I disagree - if someone does something genuinely interesting and different with a song everyone is familiar with then I can give it a lot of credit. A song that is overused becomes dull because of lots of videos being the same, no because you've heard the song too much.

Well that's the way I see it at least.
Like my original In The End vid im working on?

hmmm... to me, the biggest aspect of an amv is the music or other audio (especially in the case of music). if it's a song i dislike, i will usually not even download the video, and in one case, i absolutely HATED a video because, in my opinion, the song was completely awful. this of course probably makes me miss out on many perfectly good videos, which is sad, but i'm an audio person, it affects me the most emotionally, and i can't seem to help it.

as far as overused songs go, i always prefer new songs because i'm always on the lookout for new music, and since i don't often listen to the radio, this is the main way i hear it. i even bought a cd because of this amv:

In The End and Bring Me To Life are used so often (I've used both myself) because it's really easy to put them to video. It's like they were tailor made to fit AMVs.
