Why?
At first I did it because I realized I could (new comp w/ dvd rom) - afterward I did it because I liked doing it.
Who?
Me most of the time. I've done a few request vids, but only the ones that had themes I like as well - I did one video on something I didn't like and won't ever do it again. Mostly I make vids for me and my friends - I share them just in case someone else out there happens to like the same things I do. I know how hard it is to find videos for certain 'lesser-seen' themes, so I share them despite (or maybe because of) the narrow target audience.

When I listen to a song, I apply it to aspects in my life, in my friends' lives, whatever -- I rarely just veg out to a song. There's one song that I listened to and applied to the characters in Final Fantasy X. I'd seen how other people had done music videos like that, and I realized I had something I felt strongly enough about that I wanted to do one too.
Unfortunately, I had neither the cutscenes nor the means of aquiring them -- but I did have the cutscenes from FFVII. I'm not as connected to those characters as I am to the ones from FFX, but I decided I may as well use what I had on hand -- sort of a test run. Once I found the right song, though, I also found that connection, and the video almost made itself, and I liked it enough that I put it here.
So, I guess for me (in my very limited experience), it's a labor of love. I feel connected to these stories to the point that I want to, I don't know, pay a tribute to them in my own way; and music, to me, is one of the highest forms of communication there is. The videos are a way for me show how the stories and characters have touched me.
That and I like the challenge. It's a nice break from, "Welcome to Wendy's, may I take your order, please?"

I once tried to teach my body the meaning of the word "grace"; it laughed at me and fell into something.

My wife can't understand why I can't just lay on the couch and WATCH tv like a normal person. I have to CREATE or have an active hand in something to >really< enjoy it.

because AMVs kick ass! The reason I make them is because I like watching them. Something about trying to create something that makes people fell as good as I do when I watch AMVs like "Right Now Someone Is Reading This Title", Ëuphoria" "Engel", "Fanfarria" and all the other AMVs in my collection (about 90). It`s also a great hobby, really relaxing and a way to meet people who do the same thing and share your interests.
The truth is I`m using a comp. at school that`s REALLY slow, so I didn`t read the other answers. Someone probably answered the same thing before. But if we agree, then we agree.

LOL x2
But anyways, I've been editing for fun. It's something constructive to do in my spare time, but lately it's come to the point where I'd rather just watch my vids than make them. I keep feeling like I need to make my videos better than my last, but I don't want to spend forever on them. I don't like that combination. >_<
I edit mostly for myself and partly for the AMV audience. I want to make my own AMV's because I want ones made to my own tastes. So I edit to songs/anime that I like, and quite often I find than other people like the videos too. So the AMV community rarely affects how I edit a video. I just go with what I like.

For me, it is to more constructively express my passions for international esoterics. Also, when it comes to getting attention and notoriety in anime fandom, it's my alternative to cosplay, karaoke, or even risky con stunts that can either earn the distaste of an increasingly cynical fan sphere or run afoul of the ever more draconian policies of convention execs and staffers.
As well, I have come to realize that anime fandom is, indeed, a visual culture where artists, cartoonists, and videographers seem to be the ones that get the recognition. Alas, I had been languishing as a fanfic writer for far too long. It was time for a change.
So here I am, making videos. 8)

I don't think that has too much to do with it. I make AMVs and I'm writing a fanfic for almost a year now (at a somewhat inconstant rate), and I am bordering page 180. Yeah, it's big, but I have no self-control and I can't end it. As a matter of fact, the creative process of the fanfic is to me more pleasurable than that of the AMVs, although I'd much rather watch a five-minute AMV than read 170 pages of fanfic just for kicks.KinFreon wrote:As well, I have come to realize that anime fandom is, indeed, a visual culture where artists, cartoonists, and videographers seem to be the ones that get the recognition. They're just different ways of expressing yourself.
