Since out of all the online communities I have been a part of this one definitely has the lowest average age, I definitely don't see it as much of a factor. Though I do feel old sometimes. It's kind of funny sometimes to realize that this or other editor who's already well-entrenched here is a whole fucking lot younger than I am, and what's scarier, they were in their early teens when I first joined (and I still consider myself to be a relative AMVing newbie).
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

He went off past the rim to that fabled land of too old to editor creators what we only hear exists in legends... Just before he vanished, he tried to get me to come along, but as my work is not yet done, I resisted staying in this gloomy old world to yet to edit so more before joining him and vanishing for ever only to be brought up in bed time stories at conventions.... Yea... :P

Heh... There have been some missives from beyond the rim...

GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DARN KIDS
Hey... That's my line...

I got into the hobby about 6 years ago at the ripe young age of 33. (Go ahead. Do the math... You don't have to carry any numbers until later this year.)

Anime however has been something I have enjoyed since I was about 7ish - Speed Racer, Robotech, G-Force, on to Voltron, Ronin Warriors, and eventually Sailor Moon and the stuff on Toonami. It's been a spiral ever since.

It's nice to have a hobby that I can enjoy with my kids - going to cons (when their grades are up to par), helping in the anime club, watching different series together, 'borrowing' the oldest kid's SJ... >.> Plus, it's fun when they have friends over and are showing them amvs and saying things like, "My MOM made that..." or, "I know the person that made that (and you know who you are)."

Nice to see there are some other older 'kids' out there in the org!

I don't see age itself as an issue so much as attitude. In AMV terms, if all you ever enjoy are teenage power trip fantasies and panty shot vids then you make me feel like an old man. If all you enjoy are the deep meaningful and usually incomprehensible vids you make me feel like a little boy. I prefer the type of person who wouldn't find it at all unusual to enjoy a humor video about fucking a dog then turn around and enjoy an artistic type video set to semi-random noise. That type of variety of interests isn't confined by age, although it does tend to be mostly in very late teens and early to mid 20's.

The forums tend to skew a bit too young for my tastes. The topics are inane beyond belief and there's almost always a rather simplistic surface only not well thought out type of viewpoint that ends up as the groupthink. I prefer the IRC channel, it's general atmosphere is about 8 to 10 years older where occasionally there's a deeper discussion in between the rape jokes.

Oh, one thing that definately made me feel like an ancient decrepit old man, the first time I talked to someone who was young enough they couldn't remember a time when Nirvana was the in thing. About a year ago someone else made me feel old by pointing out that they were too young to remember 9/11 all that well. Both times were definite 'I need to quit this shit and find someone my own age to play with' moments.

jubjub2, you're the same age as me :D my kids do the same thing. Two of them edit, and one is constantly finding songs that mom and dad should edit to.
However, my two older girls roll there eyes when they bring friends home and either say "My parents are so cool" or " my parents are the biggest geeks" .... I'm not sure of their true feelings on that....

I noticed on your profile TriGGiT that you mention you're 24, so I was wondering, did someone tell you you were to old to have this hobby? Just curious.

AtomX wrote:At 26, I don't feel old at all. Not even when hanging out with people far younger than me. I would say it's because I don't act my age, but who's to say what a 26 year old is SUPPOSED to act like? Where's the manual for that? Most of the people my age act the same way I do. Are we all simply fundamentally flawed in our maturity level or something? Just doesn't make sense to me. It's certainly possible that it's because we're just living in a new era where everybody is getting younger. So the perception becomes skewed when you have the old way of thinking amongst the new way of being... If that makes any sense.
Agreed...I feel like I "should be" 4 or 5 years younger than I am. I just can't imagine going "oh shit, I'm 28, time to start acting like it" I think if you get hung up on how old or young you are, you need to get the hell out more :O
