Re: Short vs Long AMVs?
I think that in general, people (including me), think that an amv is too long when it starts getting boring, or goes nowhere, or you believe you have no reason to keep watching it (lets not go too far from 4 minutes though). There's no real LONG amv, but going around 5 minutes, chances are that people most watching it might start getting bored. Also, it's easier to rewatch a 2 min. long amv than a 5 min. long one, even though that there can be a few.

Re: Short vs Long AMVs?
One key to my decisions as far as video length is the variation available in my sources and the extent to which I can section it off into distinct and ideally even contrasting parts in my video. Even 3 minutes of repetitive beat to the same group of characters punching the crap out of each other in dramatic settings will start grinding most viewers down. Even if your sync and your effects are all really good, it's difficult to justify something like that. On the other hand, if you have a song with several distinct sections which let you change your pacing more than once during the video - from action to eerie interludes back to action, even - you stand a much better chance of getting away with your audience still awake by the end of a longer video. You also need to really think about hooking your audience back into the video at strategic points where length becomes an issue. In a deluge of intense or insanely pretty scenes, it all becomes a blur. But save a really good scene and throw it in to kick off a section of the video somewhere down the road, and you might well impress your viewers back to attention.
Where length is concerned, basically the issue is pacing. Think about it carefully and in advance. Pacing should be considered before you even get down to actual sync.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

It really depends on your preference and how you feel at the time you watch an AMV. Most of the time I don't care about the length of a video as long as what I'm watching is good.
