I know exactly what you mean LOL.Castor Troy wrote:And when that scene actually does exist, it ends up being much shorter than I expected.Nya-chan Production wrote:99.5% of the time I imagine a scene for a video, it does exist in the show.Castor Troy wrote:99.5% of the time I imagine a scene for a video, it doesn't exist in the show.
Luckyyyyy~
*Before I even start an amv, I search all over the internet to see if somebody has already made an amv with that anime or song. If I find a single amv that uses both my intended anime and song, then I'd either change the song or anime that I had planned on using or just outright cancel the project. Also, I check the org's list of overused anime and songs. If either my intended anime or song is on the list, then it is very likely that i will cancel the project. If my intended anime and song both make the list, then I'd probably give myself a quick jab to the face. LOL
*Most times when I start an amv, I plan out which part of the song will be the best suitable for the climax of the video.
*Then, I decide what my climax will be and what emotion I want to capture.
*Then I watch a bunch of amvs using that anime, and try to map out key points of the song and video that would effectively lead into the climax that I have in mind.
*NOTE: By the time that I reach this point, I probably have listened to the song about 40-50 times. And now that I have a DSi, I can even list to the instrumental version of the song.*
*Then I watch the anime series over in order to find the scenes that I want, and to get ideas for scenes that I haven't completely planned out yet.
*Then once i start editing, I realize that 75% of what i planned out doesn't fit very well. So in order to get new ideas, I watch amvs that not only solely feature the anime that I'm using, but also solely features the song that I using. I also watch amvs that have the same emotion in them that i am aiming for.
*NOTE: By the time that I reach this point, I probably have listened to the song about 80-90 times, and quite a few weeks have passed since the time when I first planned out the climax.*
*By this time, I'm sick to death of the song but I eventually crank out about 80% of the video.
*If I have a deadline to make, its probably only a few hours away, and I still have key decisions to make about the amv.
*I usually miss the deadline by a day or two, but get lucky and find out that something happened and it was extended. (As in the case of AWA's expo contest last year and Momocon's exhibition this year)
*I complete the amv and intentionally skip over the song whenever it plays mp3 player during shuffle mode. (As in the case of Love, Fury, Energy and passion by Boy hits car) I used to love listening to that song LOL I could never skip over Control by Mute Math though. Its just too good of a song.
P.S. Whenever I am truly stuck on an amv, I waste valuable time posting messages on forums and message boards. (As in the case of the AWA pro amv that I'm working on right now ) I blame the konata izumi in me LOL.

Re: How do you storyboad\plan your amvs?
The most planning on paper I have ever done for a video was for Love and Hate, where I actually wrote down descriptions of a few scenes and correlated them to spots in the song. This was the most prevalent with the scene with Venus and Pluto crossing the bridge. Though before the writing down part I had imagined that scene while listening to the song.
Mostly I storyboard in my head. I tend to remember scenes and lyrics and beats very easily. I will listen to the song I have the idea for over and over and while doing so imagine the video in my head. I'll get glimpses of scenes and as I continue the glimpses will return as more concrete scenes. From this point while listening to the song in the car or at work I will continue to imagine the video, sometimes with slight changes but mostly exactly how I originally saw it. When I actually sit down and edit I'll find the scenes and place them how I envisioned them. I rarely have to find alternate scenes because a scene didn't exist, though I have had to improvise due to a shorter scene then what I imagined.
Beyond that, I usually just listen to the song while making the clips. If a scene jumps out at me I'll make a clip of it and place it on the time line where I think it should go. The majority of my videos are done this way, though the planned clips are usually first and the rest is set up to lead into and out of each of these.

DSi lets you listen to songs without the vocal part?kireblue wrote:*NOTE: By the time that I reach this point, I probably have listened to the song about 40-50 times. And now that I have a DSi, I can even list to the instrumental version of the song.*

yeah. The DSi has 4 different sound filters. The first one allows you to listen to the song without the main vocals. This is pretty convenient when considering that background singers often get almost completely overshadowed by the main singer. Many times, I didn't even notice the background singers till I listened to the song on my DSi.Kitsuner wrote:DSi lets you listen to songs without the vocal part?kireblue wrote:*NOTE: By the time that I reach this point, I probably have listened to the song about 40-50 times. The second filter allows you to listen to the song as if it was coming out of an old radio.
The third filter makes the song echo and sound far away
And the fourth filter makes the song sound like it was coming out of a 8-bit video game. For most songs, it sounds absolutely horrible.
Oh and, you can also change the playback rate and pitch of a song without using any of the filter options.

I just wanted to point out there is a typographical error in this thread's subject. / should have been used to join the words storyboard and plan instead of \.
As for excellent storyboarding techniques I can only direct you to enroll in an engineering program at some point. Fellow students and yourself will discuss at various lengths excellent methods for reaching deep within oneself and pulling the answer out of a particular orifice. Many old school AMV editors found that was the best preparation for storyboarding they would ever be taught.
Thank you.

I just do it and feel along the way. Which is probably why I don't finish most of mine...

well sometimes you get on a roll ya know? but lately for me it's been like this
plan the amv
turn on the computer
*gets distracted*
turn off the computer
sleep on it...
return to step 2 and repeat
