Re: Anyone ever feel like more obscure anime get ignored?
The question is not stupid but most of the reactions in here ARE castor.
I'm going to rant so sit back and enjoy. First let's expand/define obscure because it's subjective. I'll define what should be talked about to anime made before 1990, anime that do not have AMVs featuring them yet. Simple and precise for the sake of discussion.
Why do we see the same anime used a lot recently in contests?
1) Most of the well known editors with many awards are not actively watching old anime. Many of them are not even watching current anime.
2) Many editors no longer come from a strong anime fan background.
The last AMV I made for competition at AWA Pro (2004) used Voltes V. I have seen the entire show. I was hoping there would be more editors branch out and try to expose people to old school footage. This was also one of the few AMVs I ever made with some soft of goal besides my own personal entertainment. My goal was to prove that you could make a video with mad action without having to resort to zomg brand new movie/ova footage. I won best action. I cannot think of an AMV that predominantly used footage older than the late 80s that's even been entered in a major competition in these last 5 years.
Based on conversations and observations my impression has been that most anime fans let alone amv creators have 0 interest in going back and viewing old shows for entertainment or historical perspective. Still I must give props as there are still a couple fansubbers like a-classic out there who are doing old shows. Sadly few people bother to take advantage of it.
If you like drama you guys should go out there and watch Touch (anime based on a sports manga from Mitsuru Adachi). If you know little of manga then keep in mind JP sports manga have a sports setting but are actually more about human drama and their characters not the sports. For example a Japanese friend of mine who read Touch which is many tankoboun long asked me about the rules for baseball and how it worked because he had no idea. Any of you watching Cross Game that is airing right now? The mangaka is the same. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsuru_Adachi
In closing,
If you grab footage from a show for a non-various AMV because it looks cool and you fail to watch the original work and what it's creators did then fuck you.
If you complain about the same shows getting used all the time but aren't willing to go out and try to explore some old shows or something that hasn't been used before then fuck you.

It is true of me...and it is rather vexing that what I consider my worst video (my very first, made with WMM and before I knew the word interlacing) is rated higher then my much newer and better stuff!Meilin1 wrote:It's funny. My Naruto videos have more downloads, comments, and opinions as individuals than all my other vids put together. Is this true of everyone, or am I just unlucky I wonder?
I mean, I love Naruto, but geez! Be honest with your ratings! Don't rate something stupid high JUST because you like the series.
I think the opposite is true though about ignoring the more obscure videos. Since alot of rookie AMV makers went overboard with the sheer amount of DBZ, Naruto, and some other shonen shows those categories are really oversaturated with lower quality products. If you make a vid to say Hime-chan no Ribbon I would be a 1,000x more excited then if you made a Naruto vid, because it is more rare and the mere fact you chose to do an older series means you probably put more thought into what you were doing.
Naruto is just a hot series now...it's on american tv, in Shonen Jump, so lots of people know it. THat means lots of people are likely to make vids to it or try to enter AMV contests with it to appeal to more people. Just a fact of life we have to live with.
Us Naruto AMV makers just need to try and make videos worthy of the deluge of attention they recieve I suppose.

I failed. Forgot to write specifically TV footage =p.
Seems to always be the rare ova/movie exception. I do remember AWA several years back someone used the Cobra movie with Careless Whisper. I can also recall someone using one more day to Macross TV. Those two were both well over 5 years old I think (don't have my records handy).
Certainly I would hope there's more than 1 per year to ova/movie at least but I don't even think we quality for that at convention contests.

I am seriously fucked :/ lol no I don't really care about new vs. old vid quality (ie JCD's Birdy- the original- video still looks awesome and it was released just last year, Macross still looks decent...) I'm just being sarcastic lol... and want to contribute to outlaw's grave -_-outlawed wrote:If you grab footage from a show for a non-various AMV because it looks cool and you fail to watch the original work and what it's creators did then fuck you.

Touch is a great Anime! So is Blackjack, Daa! Daa! Daa!, Tenshi no Konaimiki and even Naruto! There's great anime out there no matter what you like (old or new)

Some of the older anime is really good. I mean, and this is my personal opinion, but, look at Record of Lodoss War. Not only was it drawn well, but its storyline and action scenes were top notch.
In all reality, I don't download a vid based on the anime it uses. I go by the music used. Then, if I like the anime used, I look for other vids featuring that anime. And if I still like it, I go out and buy a couple seasons of said anime, and watch it several times. An example of this for me (though it cg and final fantasy) was Advent Children (which by the way my first download here was using that movie and the song "Burn It All" by A Dark Halo, highly reccomend it)
Yes, the obscure anime gets ignored. That leaves us who know about it to savor it and spread the word!

To answer the op [and ignore lots of the carp posted] I've got this...
The obscure anime are usually my top favorites. It makes me feel 'in the know' when people yack about Bleach/Naruto and then they claim to be anime fans. [heh, watch Black Lagoon, Seto no Hanayome, Pandora Hearts, Asura Cryin', and Chrome Shelled Regios, then I'll maybe think you're in the know...]
You're not an anime fan if you watch 3 shows... You're a fan of THE 3 shows. You're not an anime fan, you're a Bleach fan.
It's like all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares...
Someone make a Queen's Blade amv! That anime's obscure! ^_^ [a good one, where it looks good enough to convince idiots to sit through all the eps like me ^_^]
I do not think obscure anime gets ignored. I use them all the time! so by definition they CAN'T be ignored. Not my fault you refuse to watch the awesome-ness that are Omni Strata amvs... :p
