My parents really didn't care whatsoever until I told them "Souls and Shells" had reached number 1 on the star list. I actually felt a little sad that they couldn't care less until they knew I was "doing well" as they so elegently put it.

But on the other hand my sister (11yrs old) is suprisingly supportive and has even helped me when I used to make my old Linkin Ball Z vids.

I'm bored and you're dumb. A match made in heaven.

My mother probably would appreciate my vids if I could get her to sit through more than one anime episode with subtitles - I refuse to show her dubs since she currently thinks of Digimon when she thinks of anime. ^_^; I did make her a cd once and we watched some vids together - she liked the ones with familiar songs, but that was about it. On the whole she does not support this hobby. Every time I tell her I'm 'editing' she gets that look...then she asks me when I'm going to make money off of it. ~_~
But she doesn't mind anime itself being a large part of my obsession - she has been extremely supportive of my anime addiction since I started writing fanfiction, and as long as I keep writing, she doesn't mind that I take time out to make vids for the anime as well. As far as she's concerned, writing is something that can work toward a career - but I have no interest in doing anything that involves editing - so making vids is just a pastime that leads nowhere. We both know it.
I bought my own anime, though, and my own computer, etc - no part of my hobby comes out of her pocket and as long as I hold my own, it really isn't any of her business what I do. She knows that, so we tend to avoid the subject more often than not. Occasionally she'll get bored and will watch a few vids with me, but I know she doesn't like to - afraid it will encourage me. I think the only thing that keeps her from really worrying about this hobby is that I do it in spurts and don't plan to keep it up forever. She'd probably panic if she knew exactly how many hours I've spent just editing. So she doesn't ask, and I try not to volunteer much. It works out pretty well.
As for the rest of my immediate family - I'd never show my brother a vid - I don't like him that much and he's far too boring these days. I think he's become a closet country fan, so my music choices could kill him. My sister has watched a few vids with me - namely dbz since that's the one anime she has seen (I have *no* idea who showed that anime to her, but I think it was one of her boyfriends - she'd seen it before I had and she's 6 years younger than me...) I did show my sister-in-law one of my recent romance vids and she loved it to death, but I'm pretty sure it was just the song - any softie would fall for it. She's requested a few vids to her favorite series (Buffy >.> ) so I guess that means she supports my editing hobby...as long as she gets her fanservice vids (not that I've made any yet, but I'll have to eventually). I showed a few of my vids to my aunt recently (last weekend) but she could only follow my romance/story vids - anything relying on beat-sync was just way too fast and hectic for someone who has never seen anime in her life (and who is in her late 30s).
Friends...well, in college I showed my vids to my friends and they liked them. But then, they were the ones who introduced me to anime in the first place. My friends back home (here) don't watch anime and have the same problem as my mother - they won't watch subtitled anime so I have nothing to show them. The only real 'friend' I still have who likes anime is the one who made me sit down and watch it in college - we keep in touch. But she lives a good 4hr drive from here so I can only go get her every few months - 2 eight hour trips are nasty to fit into one weekend and hope to get anything accomplished.
I guess I am my own support for this hobby. And since I *don't* take it too seriously, that's good enough for me.

I had Elvis vs. Anime playing on my computer when my mom walked by. She was really enjoying it
But yeah, I try to explain what I'm doing. They don't really get it, but they don't mind me doing it either.

Show him that video i like." -_- she thought that video was the video i won a contest with but she was wrong, but anyway i showed it to him. he said it was neat. i don't even think my mom had seen that video either, and she left before i showed it to him! >.< damn parents!

Since I rarely see my parents, they normally don't take too much interest in my AMV stuff. They really liked all the documentary stuff me and Carlos did though. My dad really liked the NES Project AMV's, when I was a kid playing NES, he would always play a few games with me. My mom was pretty embaressed when she saw all the awards I had for Moneyshot though, she started calling me the porn king of the South.

Think that's bad? My mom tells relatives that I write and animate gay porn.
I haven't been able to look at my grandpa in the eye since she told him...and I don't even *use* hentai in vids. ~_~;;

Dad: Knows about AMVs, since he collects regular music videos off P2Ps and runs into AMVs that way. Doesn't know I do them. Would want to see them if I did, and he would have that kind of awww-lookit-the-cute-thing-let's-stick-it-on-the-fridge reaction, because he still thinks of me as seven years old. I don't intend to tell him.
Mom: Thinks anime, and just about any non-mainstream movies/shows, are "weird." ;P Oh well, no big deal. We're pretty good at respectful disagreement.
Sibs: Went to the screening at Otakon. "You make these too?" "Yeah, except mine suck." "Oh." I snuck one of mine on a kind of AMV Newbie Pack CD, but all they watch is "Stop the Rock?".
Everyone else (the extended fam' that I talk to): Don't know about AMVs, but they know I sell cosplay costumes. And are mildly uncomfortable about it. "You know, you could probably make a lot more money doing [x]" (usually making wedding dresses or something else more mainstream).
In other words, not much reaction. Of course, once you're out of high school, that peer-pressure kind of leverage fizzles out. They're my hobbies, and if they're a little eccentric - I'm spending my own money and my own time, so y'know, not much that anyone can say about it. They can't exactly claim that I'm ruining my grades or anything.
