I honestly have to say the attitude of some of the old timers in this thread is freaking ridiculous. I love to watching them cry about how they dont want new people or 'ZOMG, THEY CANT FTP!!!"
Here's the deal:
Kionon: I had something in here about you, but I changed it when I saw that you posted and will respond to you later.
BasharoftheAges: Yea, I know you're involved in AMV stuff at cons at what not and I dont know how many YT people make it into your contests, but I have seen YT people starting to make their ways into the Con scene. Mainly, the Re-Evo crowd seems to be really pushing into a few. Granted a few of them did join up on the org, but most of that studio is Tube based and even the members that do upload here, seem to spend most of their time there. Also, I recall seeing a video of Joystickies in the Katsucon finalist list. She is based on the Tube. My
Advent Crisis video is a YT video. I made it for a contest on YT, that was hosted by a YT editor, but it was a finalist at this year's Acen.
Knowname: People need to learn FTP? Seriously, it's just a file upload system. Their life and how they make AMVs DOES NOT DEPEND ON IT, Mr. FishAnalogyGuy. FTP is outdated. The Org is a video driven site because videos are the most important asset of this site, getting videos on it, should be the easiest thing to do. Anyways, it's not like it matters that people are so in love with the security that the FTP system gives them from newbs, doki already mentioned sometime ago that an upload system similar to ones on other sites was going to be implemented.
As for it being too easy and making the Org a target for people stealing videos, this is a moderated community. Unlike YT, if something like that does happen, creators actually do have the right to get it taken down.
As for FTP, being a way to filter out people, that is just plain ridiculous. Knowing how to work an FTP has nothing to do with how well someone can edit. The reason why an FTP system baffles new users is because FTP isnt standard for a video site. If it was YT, vimeo, Dailymotion, etc, as
professional video sites, would've implemented it.
Honestly what really gets under my skin is the attitude that 'We dont want new people. We dont want newbs.' The attitude is just disgusting. A lot of the people who are putting down YT amv makers and YT methods dont even hang out there that much. I spend an equal amount of time on the Tube and the Org.
I like both. I had an account here on the Org before I had one the Tube and generally, do like the criticism I get here, but what draws me to the Tube is that it very laid back. I recently became an active member of the Org a little over a year ago so I guess that makes me fresh meat. I guess I'm on of the new kids, but guess what? I'm bringing new people with me. If you or any other member have a problem with that, then go make your own little elitist AMV community for you guys to hang out in. Honestly, I know people have made a lot of close friends here and in some cases, have met their spouses here, but this isnt a social networking site. IT'S AN AMV SITE. If we make friends and lovers here along the way, great. If you see this as your own little playground for you and your buddies, IT'S NOT.
Honestly guys, that kind of attitude doesnt only alienate the new people, because unlike you guys, most of us arent dickwads and actually care about people and nurturing them into good editors. This attitude only alienates us and if you want proof of that read
Chiikaboom's Profile. Looks like the general, dicky attitude caused you guys to lose one of your most established and award winning members. Sorry Bashar, but it looks like YT editor will be taking home the Con awards soon. Honestly, after reading some of the posts in this thread. I respect her decision and dont blame her for leaving.
What I think can help the Org:
Besides a better community of elders
1-Make uploading and Searching AMVs easier.
One day, my three year old cousin told me that he wanted to show me something on my computer. In front of my eyes, I watch a three year old search on YT for one of the Digimon openings. Granted for the most part, the kid cant read or write for the most part, but he knew how to type 'Digimon' and watch it. When people come to the Org, they have to sit around and read through menus to find a search option and if for some reason, they dont see it in the menus, they finally get to it at the bottom of the list. Why is the search box all the way down there? It's practically hidden. I have spent years on this site and have just started using that search box this year. Do like every other video site and make it one of the first things people see when the come here, with a little option next to it for advanced search options like how veoh does it.
As for the uploading, it just seems natural to make it easier to upload. Most video sites, require only one step to upload a video. Which is to browse and select the video you want to upload. Now, because of the organization of the Org and for the sake of being able to search by anime, song, genre, etc, we're still going to have a slightly longer process. Still it would be nice, if you didnt have to navigate to 3 different sections on the Org in order to upload: Enter video, Upload Video, and confirm video. There should be an upload button in plain sight. That while someone is uploading, they enter whatever information they need to. For people who only wish to catalog, put an option on the upload page that says: "I only wish to catalog my video at this time"
2- Get the main social activity/feedback off the forums
There should be a place for public comment on every video. You should be allowed to make comments anytime and as many times as you want. I cant tell you how many videos I've QCed and later on just wanted to go back and say more to the editor. Besides that, this allows the other 700,000+ members who dont visit the forums to find more value in being on the Org. It allows for more people to interact with each other and for more feedback to be given on videos.
It will also separate the 'Pros' from the 'newbs,' but still allow the newbs to hang around a developed community. One thing about the Tube is that newbs can stay hidden from the pros. Just like how people who dont announce their videos here can stay hidden from the 'pros' of the main community. They have their video uploaded, but chances are, the only people that are going to watch them are the people that search for them.
Profile Comments would also help with this.
3- Change Who the Site Caters To
The Org is deeply Editor-based right now. We emphasize OPs, a 10%, and anonymous QCs. While the Tube is deeply Fan-based with their emphasis on Favorites, subscribers, and ratings. What I would like to see is a mix. I realize the Org has a subscriber system, the 'alert system,' but even the name confuses me with that. 'Alert' has a negative connotation to it. It sounds like I'm reporting the user to the admins or something. For the longest time, I didnt even realize that the 'Online' option meant that I would get to see my alerts when I login instead of getting it emailed to me. There's nothing to clue you in on where these alerts are going to appear, except for things that effect you like receiving an email when you get an Op or something. A lot of the Org-based people I talk to actually use the subscribe option on YT a lot more than they use the alerts system. Make the favorites system easier. Having to Op a video to rank it is very tedious. Whereas on the Tube, all i have to do is press a 'favorite' button and it goes into a nice handy list for me to go back to whenever i need to.
4- Promote Videos
It'd be pretty cool if we could get something like a 'Video of the Week' thing going on. Basically, people could get the option to 'promote' a video by clicking some sort of button after watching a video that's based on a votes system. Every week the votes are automatically counted and the video with the most votes, is featured for a week on the front page. It'd be nice if the video was actually embeded onto the front page so that people could stream it quickly.
Right now, we promote the Top 10%, top rated and new vid on the block. But they're not really emphasized on the layout. I like how I dont even know Russian, but I can access the top videos list easily on Akross and AMVNews because they really put it out there and you can see it in plain sight (more so with Akross than AMVnews). Alright I just visited Akross after typing that bit and realized that there was an English option. Still, I could tell what was being promoted and what was important when it was all in Russian.
5- Reorganize the Site Layout
Let's be real for a second here. This site was made in the year 2000. That was almost 10 years ago. The site has evolved since then with a lot of new features and Web standards have risen. The layout is outdated, intimidating, and unintuitive. It's cluttered. There are a lot of features that are visible at all times, but arent used by members most of the time. I'm editor, but I dont need to be able to see the 'Editors' section all the time because I dont always need to edit my videos or upload new ones. Neither do I always need to change my profile or adjust my account settings. The list goes on.
You can get the Search Menu out of there. If you put the quick search box at the top of the main page, with a little option for advanced search options that appear on another page, you get a search option that is right there for people to use as fast as they can. I'm sure many people have noticed, but when in the IRC, a lot of us will link to the YT upload of an amv instead of linking the Org. It's mostly because we can search it faster on YT.
We have a Site Store again. Instead of it being just another button amongst many buttons on the menu, you can promote it more. Make mini advertisements for the store. Encourage people to visit it and buy from there.
The Guides are completely useless to me, but I still have to be annoyed with seeing it on the menu. I'd like the option to completely get rid of it, like how YT lets me customize what I see on my front page and where I see it.
There are two places on the Menu option about journals. I can view my own journal and then I can look at my journal buddies. Most social interaction like this is located on the Profile pages of video sites. When YT had the bulletin board feature. I could view the bulletins of my friends and make a bulletin in the same place. It condensed the topic of bulletins all together.
I can go on and on about where the stuff on the Menu could be on the site. My main issue is make things less cluttered to make room for all the new features we have and will have.
