The Attitudes Of AMV Creators...

Generally I agree with you Panda. Although I consider the AMV community as a whole generally well behaved, we have our exceptions. What blocks the mind with the newbies is that the FAQ is frequently ignored as well as the other threads regarding it and it gets tiresome to everyone to keep pointing them out. Imagine if you were in a museum and EVERYBODY came and asked you where the bathroom was even though it was clearly marked when they came in, granted it's an honest question but eventually you get sick and tired of answering it.
Con privalages I haven't seen TOO many problems with, if I enter a con all I want is preferred seating because I contributed to the contest and put in hours of work for it, that's all I feel I deserve (well along with a fair judging but I think that's a given for any con). I don't gripe that much about my videos not making it, frankly I don't care so much, I send to cons really as only an effort to get my videos out there and little else. There are other cons so there are other oppertunities.
Opinions on videos amongst people here is a different matter. There is a fline line between disliking a video and recognizing its merits. There are those who ignore this line. Sure I don't like Triengel by Nightowl but I'm willing to admit that it is a good video, I just don't like it personally. Even if I LOATHE a video I will recognize its merits where they are present. However we do have members who completely ignore those merits and label a video as terrible simply because it wasn't to their tastes. I find this rude and horribly unproffesional.
Now I don't feel there is an elitist problem around here. Yes we have some people with bigger egos than others, but a lot of the time those who accuse this place as possessing an existing heirarchy have a large ego themselves. We don't have people here imposing anything on anyone else and I haven't seen anyone's volition infringed upon as long as I've been a member of this board. So as far as the ruling class goes I stick by saying that it is non-existant.
Tommy I apologize now but I have to bring up your project because it's the best example I've got for what I'm saying. Ok, the response to Tommy's project was a mixed one. Yes he was continually discouraged (myself included) and people told him not to do it. But there were another of reasons for this, one he didn't realize just how hard he would have to work to carry it and two doing another DDR project would prove problematic. Problematic because it creates a conflict of interest between projects which are nearly identical. Now I'm not going into the rights to the project because I feel that's irrelivant for the moment. Fact of the matter is that the existance of a second DDR project causes the two to compete right off the bat. Even if Tommy's intentions were entirley benign it was problematic to have a second DDR project existing due to the creators themselves being divided amongst them and as said, one guy was left stranded after starting work on the video and then it got shut down.
Ok I've said my peace, I'll check back later.

i work at a hotel. people ask me the same questions all the time. not once have i ever gotten impatient with somebody. and not everyone knows where the guides are on the site. i sure as hell didn't.
i've met creators before. and alot of them were really cool. and alot of them were too into themselves to even say hi.
i've even been emailed by other AMV artist telling me how much of a joke I am. and that i'm nothing.
i've also read it in reviews of my videos.
from my own experiences, AMV editors are jack asses. and i'm sure people think i'm one as well.
thank you,
Jack Arse.

We need more progress with video creation and not put down the creator because we didn't like it. It's the technical side that helps out not the personal opinion part. If there is a need for improvement, point it out. That will help the creator in turn, work with their next video with that much more thought about it. I think the whole points system on each technical aspect of the video needs to just disappear except for something like the overall score. It's really hard to just score something on each of those aspects and doesn't really help the creator out at all in my opinion. We just need to talk about the Good/Bad/Overall look of the video and go from there. We all need to really work together and everything! Make Love not War!
*These were based my opinions and nothing else. If there is something wrong with my thoughts on this matter, don't take it personal because it's just an opinion and not the facts!*

If that isnt Jesus, I dont know what is
As for the subect, I was a little worried about the state of things as far as AMV creators behavior, that is untill AWA (yes I know you guys are sick of hearing about that damn con, but oh well ). I managed to meet all of the peoeple that inspired me to pick up editing, and all the people that inspire me still today, and to my supprise, they were ALL some of the nicest people I have ever met. I was truely impressed. Some I got to talk with just breifly, some for a while, some became honest to god friends, but everyone was extremly curtious and supportive, from big name to no name.
As Jesus....err...Fluxy said, people are easily missinturpreted (sp?) online. Sarcasm is somtimes lost, smilies are not added when they are intended, and a general bad vibe is somtimes picked up where it realy shouldnt be.
This will always happen when dealing with text on a screen, but I have renewed faith that AMV people, for the most part, realy arnt cold arrogent people, they just play one on TV

okay..my 2 cents...
1. Elitist: I've yet to have really met anyone on the org that comes across as this. To be sure..I've heard stories, but from personal expericance, no. And what Fluxmeister said about being around friends at cons. I have to agree with. Now if you end up making friends with Random creator #77887 while there, great! But for the most part, people tend to stick in groups of people that they know and are comforatble with. That way, if you glomp someone (in my case at least ) you have no fear of having a restraining order issued agianst you!
2: As far as how a person acts online and IRL..well, I have to agree with AD. It's easy for someone to be all loud and showy online, but many times when you meet that person face to face, your actually surprised at how low key they really are ( and as to all things, there are exceptions to this rule! LOL)
3: As an AMV creator I try to help out people as much as possible. Even though I'm by no means a Premire master, I do try to watch betas of vids, offer feedback on those, and if a software question pops up that I do know the answer to, I try to help in that way, as well as give reveiws, even if they're not as long winded as MJ's are...
I think what really gets to me on the reviews, and it goes along with what Wired Knight said about video taste..is that my first has over 700 hits that I know of...and only 5 reveiws. Now, I'll be the first to tell you that the vid is not great..as it was a first attempt...but only 5 reveiws? Out of 700? Surely more than just 5 people had opinions on it...Even if it wasn't something you personaly liked. Granted. I owe my own fair share of reveiws, but as a general rule I try to get them done within a week of seeing the vid...even if the vid wasn't something I particully cared for.
4: Cons and AMV contest....I've yet to have been to a con, or had a vid in one either....but hopefully that will be different come 2003....in the meantime..I can only say that even if my vid was only shown at a con, I'd be tickeled to death! And floored if one ever won anything. I think I'd be to happy/shocked to worry about lording it over anyone.
Overall, I think the AMV creators of the ORG are all around generally good people. Sure we have our tiffs and differences, but that's to be expected in any large group of people.
And that's just MHO....

I wonder what non-AMV artists are like.

Wow
I find a 6 page thread that I didn't see yesterday...wow...oh wait I didn't check yesterday...my mistake.
Things I've observed. West Coast creators are VERY different from the East Coast creators in general and yet on the whole. I wish I was an East coast creator.
The big difference I've noticed between East & West is that on the East coast the creators see each other more, where on the West we have basically 2 real conventions (Fanime and AX) and they are still 6 hrs travel time away from each other. So the creators don't see each other much, much less hang out. To many walls around us.
Have I seen Elitest AMV creators. Oh hell yeah I have. There are a few that have big sticks up their butts but they are the same ones who will say they don't. However luckily they are few in number.
As for Newbies... I get sick of their questions, so I simply don't respond to them. Haven't people learned if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Take that attitude towards Newbies, they burst into flame to easily. Newbies bring new life, new blood, new ideas into the community and should be respected.
As for special seating at a contest. It's a priveledge not a right. I think it's a nice gesture, but I don't think AMV creators are owed such. Your the same as everyone else. Yes you have a vested interest in the outcome of the contest, but then should you really be there at all trying to make your video win?
When there is a ballot contest, I don't vote. I should vote for myself and be proud of my hard work, but I also know the other people put alot of work into their videos as well. Is it fair for me to say my video is better. Or to say another video is better then another. Respect the hard work each creator puts into their projects.
As for ermac. I'm one of the people who dislike him. This is due to actions he has done in the past. (Long story....)
Do I think my videos are good... yes, I personally like them. Are they better then anyone else's videos, no.
Feedback... I want/love feedback. I want/need feedback. I want to improve and getting a critice on my videos helps me to improve further videos. To spot flaws in what I've done, so I can improve.
Ah...there was lots that I agreed with. One thing I didn't aggree with was that we think we are better then the general audience. When we arn't. Actually I believe we are not better then the general audience, we are simply different in that we more educated in what making an AMV intitles on the whole. So we look at them differently. (I'll leave it at that, I could go into a big thing about this but I'm not going to...)
AMVs may be a hobby but they are also an artform, one that I'm personally very passionate about.
Things to remember as an AMV Creator (Or atleast I TRY to stick to):
Be Creative
Be Respectful of others works
Winning a contest doesn't mean anything
As an AMV Coordinator I try to:
Be Respectful of the Artwork that was submitted.
I think that's my lot. I most likely won't be checking this message again, so don't bother responding.

ErMac posted a pic of a giant cuming penis.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab
