I mentioned I wan a few awards at for AMVs at school, and my teachers/classmates laughed and said pretty much the equivelent of "For what? Using an editor that sucks ass?"
It's no fun on either side of the spectrum. One hand you have the "real" editors who laugh at AMVs, and then the non-anime lovers who think we're fanatics.
But at least for me, my meeting of people who don't fit into either of those crowds has been "You make music videos? That's SO COOL."
That really sucks about your parents, Oto. Luckily my parents supported me ever since I pulled the "I'm practicing for my career" card. XD

I run into this all the time. When I'm trying to explain to parents what an AMV is, and why bother to make them as a class project. Finally I usually just describe them as making videos 'mtv' style, using foreign language cartoons so that the viewer doesn't have any preconceptions about whats 'supposed' to be happening.Otohiko wrote: since at first the very idea of AMVing sounds very retarded to people who have no interest in anime at least.
Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

i just tell people that i make fanvideos (or fan-made music videos), unless i find them at an amv isle at best buy or something similar :/ that usually clears up the confusion of "whats anime?" cause sadly i get that question alot...Otohiko wrote: since at first the very idea of AMVing sounds very retarded to people who have no interest in anime at least.
(about as funny as the lady trying to explain to her kid that he was into mag-na books at the walden books (say it with me mag.... na... ) O.O, i was half tempted to correct her, but i had a feeling she'd spaz on me for making her look dumb in front of her kid.... O.o either that or she was dislexic manga... mag-na)

ooooh i got one, though it was probably more awkward for the other guy as i was too busy laughing my ass off...
So, im in the sam goody right? and occasionally i like to browse through the hentai titles just to see if there is anything interesting... and i come across the "corn" hentai, i sit there for a minute about to laugh my ass off at my discovery when some guy right behind me (who is aparently forgin to amvs.... or atleast the hell 0 one...) anyways he says to me "you know thats two guys right?"
then i actually burst out laughing... and i say "yea, but this is corn!!!" and he kinda backs off as i explain that "someone" made this "anime video" to this hentai that depicted "one of the guys getting corn shoved in his butt" and i start laughing...
i get the "back away slowly look" from him and he kinda backs off and dissapears behind some music rack... as i go up to the counter and buy whatever it was that i had picked up (not hentai though, aparently there was nothing that interested me enough to pay the inflated prices for animated porn)
i donno i wasnt uncomfortable but i sure bet he was, and i was laughing my ass off.... YAY corn!

My mom didn't quite get why I kept talking about videos for such a long time. However, after she realized that it wasn't a hobby I was planning to give up, she eventually got used to it. She doesn't encourage or deter me, really, but she'll listen if I talk about a certain idea I have if I happen to be playing the related game or watching the related anime at the time. (My mom's a gamer too - yay! - so she's pretty "with it" when I'm playing something; she also watches some of the fluffy shoujo anime with me.)SQ wrote:That really sucks about your parents, Oto. My parents have no clue when it comes to anime. I think I've convinced them that the plot may be slightly better than the cartoons they're used to, but whenever I sit them down and say "Watch this, you'll love it!"
There's a universal "Ugh..." from the crowd.
And then if it doesn't happen to have an english dub, they'll go "Subtitles? WtfNO." And walk off.
Kind of sad, really.
I did get my dad to watch Jin-Roh, though, and he liked it...
Anyway, whenever I talk about my music videos, my parents just kind of go "Well, ok, that sounds cool" and they try to play it like they understand, but you know they have no clue...
My dad used to play Diablo but that's as far as his gaming stuff goes. I'm like th eonly nerd in the family. x.x
I mean my dad deals with servers and my brother with computers, but none of them are really gamers, anime watchers, or internet freaks like me. X|

Yeah, I explained to my mother what an AMV was about 5 years ago when I started making them on my school laptop, she was in awe of being able to just edit on anything, she was under the impression that only professionals could edit i.e. TV/Movie Producers. I never really showed any of them to her until I found a way to show it on a TV, with my Video Card or when I was making DVDs of my AMVs, and this was before I entered a convention's competition. My mother doesn't really care one way or the other about AMVs, I mean it’s hard to make someone, who was about my age when MTV came out, like many new music videos or show an interest because they have seen almost everything you could think of when Music Videos became popular.
I can not imagine a parent acting that weird about editing though, but my mother has known about Napster and other P2P programs since about 1999 when I started using them or at least telling her about them, so the whole concept of copyright infringement isn't a hot topic with her anymore.

I meant how you were referring it to the 'hentai section' throughout the whole post. 0o;JaddziaDax wrote:yes i do.... and the guys on the cover of the DVD looked amazingly like guys too O.O (it was blatantly ovbious to me atleast O.o)SQ wrote:... You know it's 'yaoi' if it's two guys, right?
