To me, yes
The only thing that holds back older video's is prob the quality. Since the standerds have increased since then. Alot of the general editing in some older video's is better than the shit released now.
Look at Acomalos's perfect drug video. or Kusoyaro's Iron Lung video.
no effects, but all the editing and scene selection is amazing.

I have videos from 05' and before that I watch more than some videos that were released in 08'-09'. :|

Just because it's newer doesn't automatically make it better.

I have read only the first page of what people had to say. but its gonna take too long to read the whole lot. So I am just going to say what i think..
This might have been said before.

What I think about the years of editing video.. is that the old ones made what videos are today.. there are not many editors from the old days that still edit today. Quality wise.. though the old ones don't look that great.. as long as you can see them its ok. (this might be off topic)
Yes there are a lot of video that use more effects and what not to make a video which in most cases depending on the editor and what they are editing can take a couple weeks, few days or even a few months.

The fact that technology is increasing giving people a bigger variety of things to do just gives new people and the new generations of editors something to show for since a lot of them don't know about editing from back in 2001 and before hand.

(at this point loosing train of thought)

But most of the old editors back in the day are still respected as great editors of their time and that fact will not change.

(Completely lost train of thought, but lucky cause i could be writing for the next half an hour)

The amv's of old that I have watched where amazing at the time. I still enjoy them. Some of the new amv's with amazing effects and sync and effort put into them strike chords with me now. The old one's still strike the same chords. If I had watched the old one's for the first time after watching current day amv's I bet most of them would still be just as good. Crystal clear images and effects are awesome but the overall package of quality amv's will always be there.

I've been around the AMV community for a LONG time. Back when I got into it, people were still basically working off of VHS. (We were not doing two VCR method, but you got your footage from VHS). DVDs were a new thing, and there was VERY VERY little anime on DVD at that time. I tend to may Yaoi AMVs and the world of Yaoi AMVs is always abit behind the mainstream AMV world, as it just takes/took longer to get Yaoi titles onto DVD. So we were using VHS rips for alot longer. Which now adays I get comments on my videos about the crappy video quality. I have to wonder if the people even bothered to see/check how old the video they are watching is. I find there are alot of viewers of AMVs that don't appreciate that we didn't have DVDs back in the old days. They take it for granted what people had to work with in the 'old' days.

It's the old AMVers who give support for the 'classic' AMVs because we know how amazing they were for their time period, such as 'Tainted Donuts'. While the video can also hold up on it's own merits because it is such a strong concept, and the music is really catchy to. I think Music is also something that will effect the longivity of a video as well. The more unique songs stick around, vs the amazing video that uses one of the more generic songs of the time period.

As for Effects... Well that's a trend that comes and goes. When effects are used properly to enhance a video it doesn't matter how old or new the video is. The video is taken as a whole. Even those effect heavy videos that people screamed over in the old days, it often wasn't because of all the effects but because they used the effects well or in a new way that again enhanced the video.

I'm still an old style AMV creator. I do not own AE. I took best comedy at fanime this year with a simple no effects video. Took best of show the year before with again a no effects video. I know I will continue to be able to win awards with videos that do not have effects because the concepts are strong enough. And besides, most of the videos you will see in contests are STILL simple videos. I like simple videos. I find effects videos annoying, because they are trying to hide behind the effects. The best effects after all are those you don't notice. And I think far into the future the number one effect for all videos will continue to be, and always will be fade. Cuts and fades are about all you need in a video. (Well that and making the anime go with the music).
