Editor talk:What do your friends/family think of your hobby?

Post by Otohiko » Fri Feb 13, 2004 4:51 pm

Just wondering, as I've encountered this myself when trying to explain AMVing to my dad. He's utterly hostile to my spending time at the PC (and quite dismissive of anime as anything but 'cartoons'), and after my previous attempt to explain what AMVing is (which failed utterly), for the last week I simply told him I was playing games because I didn't want to deal with the nagging.

But, the question eventually came up again, so I had to grit my teeth and present it as something of a 'musical, moving collage of sorts'. His conclusion was that I'm simply wasting my time making free advertisement for the band and the anime :?

So, how is life for other editors? Are people around you encouraging, interested, dismissive or hostile?

I think it'd be an interesting discussion...

Let me put it like this: how does a fish explain water?

Not the best analogy, but I think it will serve.

Actually my parents are fairly positive about my hobbies, but then again I am 24 years old, so it's not like I live with them ;). In fact, I've shown my parents a handful of my videos (and other people's work) and they thought they were pretty good.

Sure they don't like me spending so much time in front of the computer, but they also realize it's a fairly constructive hobby compared to other things I could be doing.

I'm 19 myself; and I can't say I feel comfortable living with my parents at least a good 50% of the time. Of course, I also can't say my parents are too average; they expect too much from me it seems. Yesterday they've practically yelled at me for spending too much time at the computer (I was making my AMV for a whole week's worth of free and semi-free time). I asked "What did I not do that I had to do? (school, work, excercise, guitar practicing, etc.)". No answer was given; and yet they're not happy. :(

Oh yea, the irony: my dad, the real hostile one, is a professional musician. And yet he hasn't got a smidget of sympathy for AMV's. Go figure

My parents are supportive of my whole wanting-to-be-a-filmmaker, and they're pretty cool about the AMVs as well. Both of them are heavily into classic WB/Disney stuff, so they don't quite dig the look of anime, but they like my work. Usually my family's the first people I show finished stuff to (when I'm home, at least).

However, now that I can go to conventions on my own and stuff, I don't have them for votes -.-

I've not told anyone that I cut up cartoons and set them to music, and I rather like it that way.

Er. I mean, edit AMVs.

Be sure to hide the film reels and scotch tape under the bed so no one will ever find out.

My dad went so far as to get an account here at the Org, even though he doesn't watch animé, doesn't watch AMVs other than mine (as far as I know), has never made an AMV, and has no intention to start.

His last login was about a month ago, so I know he still checks up on me and my videos occasionally.

It's annoying as hell and I wish he'd stop it.

I have no idea what my mother thinks because she's never said anything to me about it.

My younger brother has had an Org account for longer than I have; he's a good loyal animé fan and AMV watcher, though he doesn't make any himself. Just last week he was bugging me about how to make a fire effect in After Effects, even though I've never touched the program in my life.
(I just checked his profile, and I must say I'm glad to see FLCL, NGE, and Kare Kano now holding the three top spots on his animé list. :) )

I don't think my other two siblings (both younger) have yet seen enough to know or care, though they're both animé/manga fans as well; I came home for winter break to find that my 7-year-old brother had just gotten his first manga, the first volume of Clamp School Detectives.

Of the friends I met through CTY (summer nerd camp), many are into animé and AMVs, and I know at least two have Org accounts, and one of those two has videos listed here (both rather nice videos, IMHO).
