The Law and AMVs

Yeah that's right, i'm in discussion with a representative from Dybex (dutch anime publishing company, like ADV and such), and i want to know what the law says about AMVs. I think there was something from a law that allows us to make AMVs, and we can't use more that 30 seconds of unedited footage in it. He wants to know the specific law that supports our great hobby. So does anyone know of any specific law that allows us to do this and dodge the licencing laws?

The beautiful thing is, it's still not legal, and I still don't care : ).
It's like getting free cable to a lesser extent, everyone does it, but no one wigs out when they find out someone else has it, they just stfu, and go on their marry way.

I'm actually quite serious, i got into discussion with this guy because i complained about them using Full Field Blend interlacing (read the new Read <a href=http://www.a-m-v.org/guides/avtech31/>ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides</a>! about that, it's buttugly and hard to remove), and the discussion quickly turned to AMVs being illegal. I really need something to beat this guy, and preferably a link to some article in the law that i can use. I hate losing to a jerk like this, especially since he is a representative from a distribution company

Like fanfics, AMV are a violation of copyright law. But also like fanfics, the chance that you will be charged is slim to none.

Look, if you like it or not, this is serious, and i like to have serious responces here, not things about special olympics. If i can convince this guy that making amvs is legal and would help the anime industry, everyone could use the outcome of that, and maybe the other distributers would show a little more suport to the amv community and not use idiotic interlacing stuff and junk like that. If i can convince this guy it would be a big step forward for the AMV comunity that atleast one distibutor supports us, and where there is one, more might follow!
But i think i came looking in the wrong place for this, because all that is going on here is thread derailment and offtopic nonsense!

Provided you actually OWN the footage and audio you're working with (IE - legally purchased the VHS/DVD/CDs/whatever)...

It's perfectly fine to edit an Anime Music Video.
It's perfectly fine to watch your Anime Music Video.
It's perfectly fine to invite over a small group of friends to watch your video.

Where the legal areas come in is when the video leaves your "hands" (being either physically submitted through the mail to a convention, or uploaded to a server for distribution).

I forgot what the exact legal matters ended up being with CSS / DeCSS (I know the source code was made public in the court papers, which essentially defeated the entire purpose...), but I don't think that's relevant, anymore...

[Anyone, shut me up if this is incorrect, I don't know much about copyright laws]
Anyway, I'm afraid to say that it is basicly illegal to distribute amvs, in europe as well, but as long as you don't make them aviable for the public you're free to do what you want with the DVDs or whatever you own. But on the other hand this is the kind of illegality noone cares for, simply say to him that AMVs are good advertising for anime shows

Don't neglect to mention that:
A) we don't make money from this (with a few rare exceptions).
and
B) AMVs do not cause lost sales.
