File naming convention
No, not a convention meaning a con such as AWA or Otakon. A convention as in a standard practice. Or a system. Here's what I mean...
Has anyone ewvery thought of making a standardized naming convention for AMVs? I know a lot of people probably wouldn't agree on any one way of doing filenames, or wouldn't even care at all... but I think it would be a good thing.
It's just that when I look at my AMV folder on my HD, it's so disorganized. It's hard to find anything without using a search function. It's really handy when a person or studio puts their name or studio name in front of the filename, and it's really annoying when a filename has "AMV" on the front of it. Gee, I wonder if this video file mixed in with all these other AMVs is actually an AMV... oh wait, it must be, it says "AMV" right in the filename! Silly me!" -- That's so useless!
Okay, for the following part of this post, I'll be using some general terms. I'm putting them in the form of variables like in program code.
1. $studio - The studio name for the AMV creator's studio.
2. $creator - The creator's name or handle.
3. $title - The AMV's title
4. $song - the music used
5. $artist - The musical artist
6. $anime - the anime used
It's really simple actually... in fact, a lot of people follow naming concentions already, here's a common one:
$creator - $title
That's a dead simple, easy to sort, file name. Example: "KATAMV - Keyscape.avi"
Or, some people prefer this method:
$creator - $anime - $title
example: "N9WOS - Tenchi Muyo! - Hero.avi"
some people do this:
$anime - $artist - $song
Example: "Tenchi Muyo - Foo Fighters - Everlong.avi"
Some liek this: (Myself included, though it's probably not the best...)
[$creator]$title
Example: [Garylisk]Kyo's_Habit.avi
Lastly, some people use a whoel lot of information:
$studio - $creator - $title($artist - $song)
No example, but I've seen it...
Anyway, the question here is, which naming convention do you prefer, which do you use, and which do you think should become the standard?
Or do you think there should be a standard?
My one other suggestion is this... the golden donut could be a very useful tool in enforcing a naming convention. When an AMV is uploaded, a script could be made to rename it according to the video information and conforming to the naming convention.
Just a thought.

My personal naming convention is $anime - $title - $creator. Since I rename my downloads in the "Save As..." box before they even start downloading, I don't see why enforcing a naming convention is needed. Anyone with a personal convention is free to rename the files themselves to match whatever scheme they use.

I always name my own videos BMA - $title (BMA being the acyronym for Bad Martial Arts, not to be confused with the lowercase "bma_ksa", another fine creator who makes way better videos than I do).
I'm too lazy to rename my videos. I just remember 'em. Sometimes it leads to happy coincidences of viewing, for example, trying to find a weird named video one time I restumbled onto "The Bounty Hunters That Don't Do Anything" (which has a filename consisting of a string of numbers followed by HX...not to punk out silver_moon and Sierra Lorna or anything.... ) and was happy for a while.

Which is weird because the file on local's name is not a string of random numbers. "KaZaA - Where idiots rename your files randomly!"

True, there is a bit of a matter of preference here. For example, do you want your AMVs sorted by what anime they are, what creator made it, etc...
I prefer to sort by who made the vid since it's their editing "art"... the anime is just the paint, so to speak. I doubt someone would organize the names of famous fine art by what kind of paint was used - You'd wanna know the artist's name instead. Not "oil" or "acrylic" or "woodcut" etc... - Although that information is vital, it's not top of the list in my mind.
That's just how I feel.
