Call me nuts if you will, but I think this could work:

From out of nowhere today, I came up with an idea to make a Gundam Wing video with "Tunnel of Love" by Dire Straits. The song is 8 minutes and 10 seconds long, do you think I should make this?

Lyrics:

Getting crazy on the waltzers but it’s life that choose
Sing about the sixblade sing about the switchback and a torture tattoo
And I been riding on a ghost train where the cars they scream and slam
And I don’t know I’ll be tonight but I’d always tell you where I am

In a screaming ring of faces I seen her standing in the light
She had a ticket for the race just like me she was a victim of the night
I put my hand upon the lever said let it rock and let it roll
I had the one arm bandit fever there was an arrow through my heart and my soul

And the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
And I’m just high on the wold
Come on and take a low with ma girl
On the tunnel of love

It’s just the danger when you’re riding at your own risk
She said you are the perfect stranger she said baby let’s keep it like this
It’s just a cakewalk twisting baby step right up and say
Hey mister give me two give me two cos two can play

And the big wheel on turning neon burning up above
And I’m just high on the world
Come on and take the low ride with me girl
On the tunnel or love

Well it’s been money for muscle another whirligig
Money for muscle another girl I dig
Another hustle just to make it big
And rockaway rockaway

And girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the spanish city to me when we where kids
Oh girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the spanish city to me when we where kids

She took off a silver locket she said remember me by this
She put her hand in my pocket I got a keepsake and a kiss
And in the roar of dust and diesel I stood and watched her walk away
I could have caught up with her easy enough but something must have made me stay

And the big wheel keep on turning neon up above
And I’m high on the world
Come on and take a low ride with me girl
On the tunnel of love

And now I’m searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades
Searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
In any shooting gallery where promises are made
To rockaway rockaway from cullercoats and whitley bat out to rockaway

And girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the spanish city to me when we where kids
Girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the spanish city to me when we where kids

With a song that long, my first answer would be no. It's difficult, time consuming and the chances at success are low. But the heart wants what it wants, so if you do make this one, here are some thoughts:

If you're going to keep your audience entertained for 8 minutes the story suddenly becomes the most important part of the amv. Your audience should know the characters and the relations between clearly, so I'd use about three characters and not show any other people, just your three characters. Sync is still important but only during the important bits of the story. With a video this long having a very 'relaxed' sync or flow duyring some part is a good thing. In fact you should generally vary your editing style (fifteen seconds of explosions and then fifteen seconds of slow touchy feely stuff, that sort of thing).

The lyrics don't really tell a very coherent story so I wouldn't worry about matching the lyrics too much. Show a wheel when the guy says wheel, and a muscle when he says muscle, but tell your own story, and make it as clear as you can.

That's how I would go about it. It's a big project, but if you manage to do it right, it could be cool.

Long videos can work, but they're EXTREMELY difficult to pull off. Not just editing, either. You're in for a fun time encoding it, too.

I second everything Risk One said. Speaking from experience, I did one video last year for AWA Pro that topped out at 7:26. Varied editing style and good story flow throughout the video are crucial to not boring the audience.

Hey, it won Best Character Profile, so I guess I did something right...
