The star-rating and it's (non-) sense

Post by Tormentor » Fri Nov 18, 2005 10:23 am

Hey guys, I'm just wandering what all these guys out there think. I have 2 videos on my profile. The one is an ecchi-fun-video. The other one is a drama contest-winner and now have a guess which video had the higher star averrage for long time (anout 3,50). I know that a lot of people just give one 3 stars in order not to notice the point that they downloaded a video again and again. I would like to collect your opinions to the star system here.

I thought that you could download as many times as you want but you could only give 1 star rating

I answered this in another thread

Little missunderstanding. What I wanted to say, is that if they enter the members mainpage a bar appears in front of them, which shows which videos were downloaded and which they see again every login, if they didn't declare a star-rating. Sorry for my English  .

For me I leave honest star ratings. If the movie totally rocked my socks I give it a 5 and if it just sucked it gets a 1 or 2 depending on my mood. 3's are average and 4's are great but not fanstastic. I think the star ratings are good especially when not everyone leaves an opinion. Instead of leaving an opinion they can just give you a star rating.

Then give them a star rating so you won't have to see it anymore.

I believe it's a kind of pattern. The moment a video gets released it usually gets a relatively high star rating by the people who leave them immediately after downloading. This keeps up for a few days or maybe weeks for the people who download many videos and quickly reach the 10 video download limit, and then leave their (honest) stars, just like me. After that, the score tends to drop alot. Those are the people who only download a video every now and then and are forced to leave a star rating at some point when they reach 10 videos. Some of those leave every video a 2 or something like that since they don't care and don't want to bother remembering every of those videos.

I don't believe star ratings. You don't know, why people gave you that rating or if they even thought about leaving an honest star rating. In an op you can see if the person really had some thoughts about your vid. If someone just types "that roxxx" or "that suxxx", well, I wouldn't take those too serious.
And you also know what's good or bad about your vid.
I also find it a little annoying that I always have to leave a star rating to downloaded vids, because I know that there are people who just think like me and who don't believe the whole star rating thing. So I can't really see the sense behind this.

Plenty of people don't, especially if they're new to the hobby.

i like to know what's good/bad about each and every one of my videos. as soon as i download a vid, i watch it, and leave my honest star ratings. i think that is the most effective way to rate a vid.

I meant if some people gave you honest detailed ops it's easier for you to find out the good and bad things about your vid than if there's just your star rating.

Actually for me it seems the opposite. The best star ratings I have are on some of my older videos whoes ratings sucks prior.
In my opinion, star averages are milk, they just get better with age.
