The Star Rating System?
Does the Star Rating System really reflect how good your amv is? Or does everyone just mark a 3 everytime, out of laziness and eagerness, to watch a new amv. I'm saying this because it seems a lot of amv star ratings center around 3-3.5, even if they deserve it or not. I guess I'm just curious. I'll be interested to here your comments.

A little from column A, a little from column B. In general I'd say its accurate, unless you have interests outside the norm.

Yea, your mileage may vary on this. I tend to think of it as providing rather boring ratings for the most part, since a lot of the videos with higher ratings tend to be the more popularly-likeable ones. Many interesting vids that deserve credit for creativity get shunned by the popular crowd that dominates the .org audience.

What you mean with "good". As vague as this term is as vague are the star ratings too. I think it's mostly the popularity of the vid, which depends on several factors. It has not much to do with the quality of the vid, otherwise my star ratings had to look different. A long time my worst vid was the highest rated.

I agree w/ JaddziaDax. My newest amv seems to be pretty good. I've gotten several comments on the announcement forum, one op, and several quick commentaries on it. None of which had anything really negative to say about it. But you would'nt know by it's star rating. It only has about 40 star ratings now, but I'll probably take it's current score more seriously if it stays in that range when/if it get's more ratings. It's hardly "accurate", but if anything, it does a relatively decent job at separating the decent stuff from the absolute worst of them all imo. I'm willing to bet that there are a lot of people that seem to throw out 3's and 5's like there nothing without giving it so much as a second thought. (not that I care; I'm just saying.)
What probably promotes this, is the fact that the star rating is a forced opinion in a sense. I know in college, teachers make us fill out teacher evaluation papers. Most of us don't really take those things seriously. The majority of students randomly fill in the choices given and leave. Same thing here. A lot of people just simply don't want to be bothered. So not much thought really goes into the star ratings from my point of view.
If people like it and don't really care about the flaws of the amv, they usually give it a 5. If they liked it, thought it was so-so, or simply don't care, it's usually given a 3. If the viewer stops watching the amv mid way, those are where the 1's come in. 2's and 4's seem to be scores saved by those that may have thought about what to grade the amv for more than a second.
I had once actually taken the time out to keep track of my star rating average for one particular amv and figure what each person had rated my amv. I kept track to about the 50th star rating. Based on what I had recorded, it recieved a lot of 3's and 5's with a few 4's in between. Of course, I'd have to do something like this multiple times to really back up anything, but this is just my conclusion based on what I observed here.
They should improve the star rating system and make it so that you grade on a 10 star system as suppose to 5. I think it could help make things a bit more accuarate.

Star Rating system
Sorry, I really can't agree with some of you. I use the star rating system honestly to reflect what I thought of someone's AMV. While I'm sure everyone puts effort and time into making these videos, you can tell the difference between those people who really put everything they had into making one over the person(s) who decided to use a catchy song and poorly combine it with clips of a random anime. If an AMV is popular, it's not by chance. Reality is that it is a good song put together with some great edited clips of anime that make it stand out from the rest.

while you maybe honest in your star ratings, not everyone is as honest as you...
I personally grade an amv (star wise) on how much i liked it...
but editing, quality and talent do come into play with that... cause if you have a great concept but execute it poorly then i cant enjoy it.... but thats my personal choice...

There was a thread a while back that asked the same question. Everybody posted their star ratings.
So, you can see that the trend is for stars to fall into the 'average to good' range. Personally, I try to rate a video as honestly as I can. Mostly, you'll find that your video star rating will eventually average out over time. Very few videos are able to maintain a very high rating. Personally, I tend to be pretty brutal with them since they are even more anonymous than the quick comments.
