You can use Sigur Ros's music in your amv, LEGALY

I know that people here either don't know or care that using most music in an amv is illegal, but I thought it's cool for a band to publicly give permission for fans to use their music in their own works.

Cool, my brother (Sigur Ros junkie) might like that!

That said, I believe most artists that I've used or will use would also not be in opposition.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

True. I think most real musicians would be happy to see their music used in alternative media. It's just nice for a group to actually proclaim it.

Hmm . . . that seems to only refer to student films.

I think the student film bit refers to the fact that, that is usually where your going to hear the music. I believe this to be the more definitive bit on the issue: "you can use sigur rós's music as long as it won't be used for commercial purposes."

The question does. The answer is much broader.

That's really interesting.

The answer to that question is amazingly permissive, moreso than a large number of Creative Commons licenses. (Even BY-NC, which seems to be closest, requires attribution.)

Now all I need to do is verify where sales through SandBag go. If it's mostly going to Sigur Rós and not some label or other annoyance, then I will gladly purchase their albums :)
