What to you is the most important aspect of a good amv?

Post by Jasta85 » Wed Feb 28, 2007 8:17 am

Ok, i'm honestly just curious as to what people think is the most important part of a good amv, or most important part(s) if you have more than one.

Personally i rate these in order as most important:
1. Concept
2. Song choice
3. Sync/Flow
4. Special effects
5. Anime used

To me concept (the idea behind the amv) is the most important part. Face it, there are a lot of talented editors out there who can create a perfectly synched, flashy effect filled, high quality amv and i see a lot of these all the time. However, to me, the amvs that truely get noticed are those with a great idea backing them.
Yes there are some amvs which have risen to fame because of the awsome effects used in them (Euphoria, Naruto's Technique Beat) but most of my favorites are those with a great layout behind them, not just a meaningless action vid.
Examples of awsome AMVs with great concepts and that didnt rely on effects:
Hale's mom (hilarious)
Narutrix (people seem to hate trailer amvs these days but everyone loves this one)
Real Ninjas (this may not be as impressive by todays standards but it was one of the first amvs i saw when i came to this site and it's still one of my favorites, the fact that it's still high in the top 10% shows i'm not alone in thinking that.)

I know i really shouldnt put song choice before editing but i've seen some really amazing amvs that i only watched once and never again simply because i hated the song. While ive kept very average amvs simply because i loved the way the maker combined the two.

anyway, this is just my opinion, i'm curious as to what others think is most important to making a great amv

I guess it really depends on your definition of a good AMV.

For me, it comes down to just how enjoyable the video is. A video can be really well made, have awesome concept/design/effects, but I might still think it's a little boring. While I would respect it for being an awesome video, it's not necessarily something I would want to watch repeatedly.

I think I agree with your analysis of what you think makes a good AMV. Those items just don't necessarily make for an AMV that I would enjoy.

You can list off various aspects of AMVs all day, but there is one aspect I think that truely defines what a good AMV is for me--that is the heart or soul of the video. You bring up some good example's like Hale's Mom, which I think is also a good example of a video I enjoy. It's not super amazing, but it's FUN.

The part that doesn't suck. That's always good. Unless it sucks.

In seriousness though, it's hard to define the more important factors of a good AMV. Each 'good amv' is unique, and has different aspects that make it good. Some are good for their concept, or synch, or effects, etc etc. You cant pinpoint good factors for AMVs.

I'd put sync/flow a bit higher on my list, but otherwise it's the same here. Concept is still key to a good video.

That said, if it's a good concept and i've never seen the series - I probably won't appreciate it. Also, concept means nothing without proper execution. I've screwed over some of the few videos i made that (IMHO) had very good concepts but were poorly executed.

The only thing from your list that I consider valid is the song choice. Beyond that, it sucks, or it doesn't. The other facts could all put at 2.

Oh, wait wait, I got it! I know what makes a good amv!

Emotion.

Flashy shit is just flashy shit if there's no emotion behind it. Unless an editor is able to communicate what they're feeling to me, I'm bored. No matter how many awards or accolades or top spots a video can win.

Isn't that right Jay? ISN'T IT?

I would say how much it shows aspects from the anime it's using. Since I watch AMVs based on the anime, that's what I want to see most.

Is Anime chosen even a factor? OR are we talking the choice of anime to music? Which is realluy just a subset of concept.

Anyway I rate concept the highest as one has to understand the concept of the video or it becomes incomprehensible and losses its meaning. After that I'd say the synching/editing of the video because that's what keeps the eye on the video and the viewer interested. Special effects would be at the bottom because there is no way where special effects automatically correelates to a good video.

well i think that it is the song choice and the anime you use, effects is not that realy important because thers some good amv that dont have any effects. one of my amv has effects and it its not as good as one of the ones that i have that dont have any effects.
